<< Sounds like parents are ducking responsibility for their kids' video games again.
If parents taught kids how to handle them PROPERLY: Like putting them back
into the case right after you take it out of the console.
>>

Yes, they will put the disks back in the case, but do you know how difficult it is to hold a disk with a small hand, open the case, and put the disk inside the case? And yes, parents do take reponsibility: that's why Sony makes 5 disk DVD palyers ;)

Damascus, you are such a cynic, sorry I couldn't resist :D

Valhalla1, that is quite an interesting theory, reading over a 100MB/s network would be faster than reading the DVD disc itself. Now the major obsticle would be getting the disc info off the DVD-Rom and onto a network drive. The next step would be altering the X-Box's s/w to point to the network drive instead of the DVD-Rom drive. Quite a bit of work, but plausable nevertheless.

It's not hard at all. All you have to do is to make sure you get them to put their
thumb through the hole in the middle.

come on people!!! Give me a break with the "I want to back my games up, really", or "my kids are going to break the discs and I want to have a backup"....

If you are letting your small children load $50 DVD/game discs into a $300 system, then that is your fault. Are you saying you should also be able to make a backup DVD for all the movies you own, or is that not needed because DVD's are only $16 each? If the kids are old enough to use the system on their own, then they are old enough to be shown how to properly do it, period.

Once "backup" methods exist, then of course they would be used to feed all the warez kiddies...have you seen how many posts there are on the dreamcast newsgroups? No wonder this system didn't last (which is too bad because it had some great titles). PS2 titles are now starting to appear, but PS2 sales are well ahead of the DC's.

I wouldn't anticipate we will see any type of X-box game copies for at least another year, but it will probably happen sooner or later.

As for X-box emulators, the graphics processor in the X-box has two pixel shader units, whereas PC Geforce 3 cards (all) only have one...other than that, theoretically it could be done. Again though, I wouldn't look for those within a year, and I wouldn't want to fight MS in court either!

gsaldivar, that was a very informative post I must say :D

NeoV, yes, you do make a good point, but there are some people out there that just want to make a backup because they can. They don't care about pirating games, selling backups or the like, just being able to make a backup is kinda like a merit badge. Just my opinion.

This may be, but they're far outweighed by the industrial strength pirating that goes on in Hong Kong/malyasia/etc where game pirating is massive business.

it's more of a "when" rather than "if" question,

<< Microsoft should sell an Xbox emulator for PC users and skip the dumb boxes. They're losing a bundle on the hardware and hoping to make it back on SW royalties. They should just take the royalty $$$ and skip the money losing. I've got an AthlonXP 1800+ and a GF3Ti200. That's pretty much what's in the Xbox >>

xbox only has 733 p3 chip right?

making it a celeron 733?

who wants an x-box anyway?

the TV screen resolution will never look as good as a monitor, so just get a better 3d card and play the PC version of games...which can be backed up if needed.

NeoV, I strongly disagree with you. Remember how easy the PS1 was to mod and play backups? Last time I checked they have done VERY well (1/3 of all households I believe) and sony made a bundle.
