Is it possible to connect 2 PCs together with modems?

Modems don't work that way.

You might look into a cheap USB ethernet adapter if you don't want to add a NIC to your systems. Two + a crossover cable would do the trick.

Some places sell software and cables so that you can network two machines with USB... Radioshack has it, and I am sure there are many others.

Null-modem cable would work as well...

Any Bestbuy, CompUSA, etc., sell "Direct Connect" cables. You can get USB, Serial, Parallel. Avoid serial as it's the slowest by far. For the best speed, you can get 2 Ethernet cards and a cross-over cable to connect them.
