Is it possible to build a backup/data server for 300-500 bucks?

I'm looking to build a system soley for the purpose of backing up data. I don't need a RAID system just a box that I can use to duplicate the data on my desktop/laptop.

Also what kind of programs can I used to automatically backup data?

Finally what are the the most reliable hard drives on the market these days? I'm guessing it's probably the Seagate Barracudas.

get an old computer system from ebay, add a new hd maybe, network it, install second copy 2000 and you are set to go

I'd like to have my backup drives seperate from the rest of my machines, that way if I ever get a virus or some kind of malware I can have a layer of protection.

Yes this certainly doable - either assemble one with all the parts lying around, or buy an old box with a valid OS, add a largish HD and you are all set.

As for programs, the one I would highly recommend is Replicator free from http://www.karenware.com/, its a folder replicator i.e. you pick a folder in computer A and copy it to a folder in computer B, and schedule it run when you want. It runs on all windows OSs including server, and can generally handle open files. Minimal effort to install.
