Hi,

Is it possible that my AMD 64 3200+ processor could have been damaged if I turned on the power without the thermal grease in between the heatsink applied? The power was on for maybe 20 seconds tops. I applied thermal grease but when I turn on my comp, all I see is multicolored crap. Any suggestions? TY.
 
A full spec list would help us get insight on your system. Because the A64 has a heavy nickel-plated copper heatspreader stuck to the core, it will ramp up slower in temperature than a "naked" CPU core, because there's something to help absorb the heat. I'm just speculating, but I'd guess that 20 seconds is ok there.

So give us full specs, including brand/model of the power supply, the RAM, video card and any other items that make up the computer. Also, is the mobo correctly mounted on standoffs and does it have its ATX12V plug and its supplemental video-card power cable hooked up?
 
yes, it could easily have been damaged. If possible try it in another machine, or a least confirn that there are no video card issues that could be causing that problem.

Amd 64 3200+ NC core
DFI Lanparty UT nforce3
Antec TruePower 430 Watt
Radeon 9800 Pro 256

Ok, and what RAM? Do you have another system that you can use to test some parts from, like the video card for example?

If you get corrupted video, then also make sure the video card is firmly reamed into the bottom of the slot, there are two layers of contacts in there and new AGP slots can be stiff sometimes. And you say you got the video card its power pigtail hooked up?
 
Ram is corsair value select pc3200. I have a gig of it in there.

To clarify on what im seeing, I just see colors flashing in place on the screen instead of the bios or something.

What happened was, I put the processor in my motherboard without opening the lock first. I then realized this afterwards and had to rub off all the old thermal grease that the heatsink came with. I put it in like it was meant to this time and added new thermal grease.

I tried a different video card; same thing.
 
I see. Did the heatsink manage to force the CPU into the socket despite the lock? Have you looked over the CPU carefully for bent pins yet? The thermal grease is supposed to be ok for several installations/removals, so you don't have to re-do it every time if you don't want to.
 
I inspected the gold pins on the underside of the processor and I couldn't notice any bent pins. It still fits very well into the socket.
 
When I turn the computer on, it makes a beep noise then starts the screen with colors. I've heard that the beep can help determine the error. Anyone know anything about this?
 
What kind of monitor do you have, and does it use a DVI cable or a regular analog VGA cable? I learned the hard way that it's not good to hot-plug DVI 😱 Now I have a Radeon 7500 that only works on its VGA port, the DVI port gives... wild colors. Always living and learning...
 
dude, you've got a 754 MB and a 939 cpu, at least thats what i think that MB is

yes, the beeps mean different things for different MBs. Im guessing in your case it just means cpu issue so it doesnt really help you

You mean 15 pins, right? So that would be a standard analog VGA connector. Hmmms... 😕 It does sound like your CPU might be Seriously Messed Up?. 🙁

 
Just the obvious one: try it in a known-working A64 system, and see if it gets similar results there or if it works.
