Is it possible that we create God instead of God creating us?

Think about it. Our brains are made up of neurons which can be thought of a very primitive processing units. All these neurons are connected to each other in a complex network. All they do is sum up their inputs from other neurons and if the sum is greater than a threshold, fire off an impulse. The connections between neurons are constantly adjusted with weights so that some inputs to neurons are given greater effect in the sum of all inputs.

From a wider view, we see all these neurons going off and on, creating complex patterns and sequences.

And from this complex system, arises the consciousness of man!

Now, think of each person as a complex processing unit. We are all connected to each other in a complex network. We're becoming more connected because of the internet, TV, telephone, face to face communications, etc. We constantly adjust the 'weight' of these connections -- for example, I give more weight (importance, trustfullnesss etc) to communication from close family members than to a random discussion forum and I try to increase my 'weight' to others by trying to make others think similiarly to me (Xbox 360 is better than the PS3 and here are my reasons for thinking this).

From a wider viewpoint, the "activities" of each human might look like a complex pattern and sequence. For example, when 9/11 occurred, we saw a flurry of activity in communications centered in the US and pulsating back and forth from other areas like Europe and the Mideast.

As our population grows and the network/communication is increased, could it be possible for a higher consciousness to arise? Is this higher consciousness -- God?

And this higher consciousness will have access to all our records (we have computers and databases storing everything about us -- date of birth, blogs, photographs) so it's quite possible for this higher consciousness to "recreate" us in his mind. In a sense, we can be reborn in a simulated world in the higher consciousness's mind.

It could be that we are god and everything around us is god.

if you think of it pantheistically

This is the most original thread ever, questioning the existence of God?? Never done before!

my brain hurts...

was god invented by humans? duh. people need explanations for things they can't explain or understand. why does the sun rise? because some god pulls it across the sky with a flaming chariot and fire horses! i don't get why you're asking this rather obvious question. people did create god and then didn't understand why they were there so they said that god created them.

I actually think that the root reason why God was created was because of love -- not as an explanation of how things worked.

We can leave out the word 'God' in our explanations. Why are planets attracted to each other? Well, there's this mysterious force called gravity that is associated with mass that pulls other mass towards it according to this formula.

God will always exist if there is love. We see a sad child because he/she just lost a loved one. You care (love) this child so you want to ease his/her pain. Will saying, "They are dead now. They are gone forever. You will never see them again. Just move on. Look on the bright side -- at least they will never be sad or be hurt again since they are dead and gone forever.", make them really feel better?

Not really. So, we "invent" a way for us to see our departed loved ones again. Maybe they're in another place and we'll see them again when it's our time to go. Maybe there's this "creator" that will take care of them in this happy place. And then the child isn't so sad anymore because he/she feels that he/she will see their loved ones again.

Thats a pretty cool idea, actually.

So you're saying that our current hive mentality will eventually evolve to the point where communications are so fast that it's equivelent to neurons firing? And that the entire human population as a whole will essentially be a new being?

Like the borg? :Q :D

Joseph Campbell was thinking the same thing. He said that man created God in his own image. He also added that he did not have many friends.

Reread it, he's not really saying it like that (same goes to the rest of the people who replied in the same vein). It's really a pretty interesting, matrix-esque idea.
