Is it possible that the PS3 is breaking Blu-ray movies?

Okay, well, i got two movies over the weekend, and both movies have skipped, and then stopped playing. I get an error usually. When i take the disc out, there is a little nick on the edge of the disc.

The thing is, it's never happened before for any of the like, 30 blu-rays ive played on there before, and never before these two discs. also, my PS3 games are absolutely fine. I havent checked the discs before putting them in, so im not sure if it is some sort of freak coincidence or the ps3 is possible breaking them? No, i do NOT move the PS3 at all...with or without discs in it.

omfg....please dont be a defective ps3.

Do you think its weird that nothing has happened to my games or any other discs? I put a dvd in there and let it run, and ill check it later, but so far so good. although i know the laser is different. but a laser couldnt be causing the disc to break, could it? Maybe it just is a coincidence. do I get free repairs if i have my receipt?

do you guys think freezing weather could have damaged the blu ray discs in the mailbox? I get a movie tomorrow, i'll def. check it out before i put it in.

I assume you do netflix or blockbuster. Its possible that the discs were already damaged to begin with. The durabis coating doesn't prevent cracks. Temperature might have something to do with it but its has to be exposed to below freezing temps for a while before its damaged.

There has been a huge issue with blu-rays from netflix being damaged. They all have a little crack on the edge like you describe. Netflix seems to have their heads buried in the sand on the issue, it seems that even if a customer ships the disc back as damaged, netflix is sending them back out again.

It's the rentals, not the PS3.

I rent through Blockbuster Online and in-store, and have yet to have a disc that has any playback problems. However, I have had a few discs that show a little bit of a crack or nick on the outermost edge. They have been very minor, but I suspect it's from shipping or something. Blu-rays might be more prone to such damage with them being a single piece of plastic/material. I don't know how that'd be the case, but I've never really seen that with DVDs and DVDs are two pieces of material essentially mended together.
Blu-rays have been more durable for sure, and awesome for rentals because you don't get scratched discs, but then there appears to be that issue of cracked discs on the outermost edge.

I've gotten rentals where it looks like the cleaning or scratch-removal tool they used has chewed away part of the plastic at the edge of the disc, it almost looks like a bite taken out of it.

Start looking at your rental discs -before- playing them to see whether it's the PS3's fault (unlikely).

I hope nobody uses any such tools on Blu-ray discs. Absolutely no need, and could only lead to problems.
Rental companies should let the user take care of it, which all that needs to be done is take any clean rag or t-shirt and wipe however you see fit. Nothing of that nature, short of it being a jewel-encrusted shirt, is going to scratch the disc. Those things can take various sharp metals to the surface, so I'd say not much to worry about a shirt.
