Is it possible for me to host my own website?

What methods would I have to do in order to host my own website. I want to make a simple news site, but I don't want ANY banners or popups. What kind of URL would I get?
 
You would need a fast connection, definitely, because if somebody was to access your site in your 56k connection server, it would be slow. You would also need to Install Windows NT server, or UNIX, depending on which one you wanna use. Why dont you look around the web???
 
look around the web? The thing is that I don't know what to look for 😉 I'm installing Win2k later on, and I'm on a 250KB/50KB cable connection.
 
You could run IIS off win2k (pro gives you a max of 10 simultaneous connections), then use something like dhs.org to give yourself an address like alphaivt.dhs.org for people to access (unless you want to deal with getting your DSL provider to assign you a static IP and putting a domain name into their DNS, which they probably won't do unless you have business DSL). Downfall of course would be speed, but if it's just a small site without a ton of content, that's about all you really need.

What if I sign up for a domain name say www.alphaivt.com, who will host that site?

Sorry if these questions sound "simple" but I do'nt konw anything about these subjects, thats why
 
If you're looking for something that's that much higher traffic, you'd need a high-speed "business" class DSL line that includes an agreement to host DNS for you (or allow you to host DNS). At that point, it would probably be a much better idea to pay for a colocated server from any one of the presence providers/hosting services out there so that they could take care of your hardware/software needs and you could just concentrate on actually building the site. In addition, downtime ceases to become your responsibility (business DSL only guarantees uptime of your connection, not of your servers) and chances are, your connection to backbone and thus to your viewers would be more stable (many of the better hosting services are connected directly to major backbones instead of routing through several 'jumps' -- which would mean there are less chances of a router/connect going down for one of your viewers).

You can use win98 as I do, you just need to install the NT service pack that includes IIS. I'm running my website w/ my DSL connection (it's only 128K outbound), it's a bit slow, but I don't anticipate much traffic (check my sig).
 
I am using xitami web server and tzo dynamic DNS service. http://www.four-banger.tzo.com
When you register TZO, the .tzo.com can be dropped from the domain name. I have no complaints so far but I don't have daily traffic. More like several hundred hits a few times a month when I do an updte.
 
If you register a domain with register.com, they give free dns hosting with mx record and all. Xitami is a great server and works with Win95+.
 
Note that DNS hosting alone isn't good enough...you need an AUTHORITATIVE dns server for your IP to always resolve (backwards and forwards) properly.
