Is it okay to post a link to an mp3?

If you made the content of the MP3 yourself, or if you have the legal right to distribute it freely, then yes. Otherwise no.

EDIT: Changed to make it clear that he must have created the content of the MP3 file, not just have encoded the file into MP3 format.

Can't you link to it if it's actually on the band's website?

If the band has it freely available on their website, then linking to that website is legal, yes.

Of course is linking distributing? The person who is in charge of the server is distributing. Simply posting a link is well - simply posting a link.

Legally, I don't know if that will save you or not. But it sure isn't ethical.

Why? It's like saying your neighbour's front door is open, not providing a shipping service with their furniture.

I found a link to an awesome metal song from a band I've never heard of.

What band?

Strapping Young Lad

The name of the song is Love?. I actually found the song by doing a google search for the artist, song, and the word mp3. They didn't have it on itunes or I would have bought it.

Strapping Young Lad is good. I have SYL and Alien, which the song Love? is on. Love? = good. If you have the album, the song has some extra riffs in the beginning.

Wow, that's horrible. Bands like that ruined the Metal genre.

Can't anyone sing anymore?

Actually, Devin Townsend, the vocalist and driving force behind SYL, is one of the best and most versatile vocalists alive. Ifd you don't care for his screaming, you should check out his solo stuff, most notably "Things Beyond Things." It's very mellow and really showcases his talent.

The thing about SYL is that the music is so incredibly produced and so dense, it's really heavy and a little tough to get into, but once you do, it's awesome. The first SYL song I heard was AAA and I was just blown away. Awesome song.

Also, if you want to check out some metal music for free check out the record label websites:
Direct Link to download page:
Century Media Free Songs
Metal Blade Free Songs

Nuclear Blast They have a list of record lables. Nuclear Blast is a record label, and I don't know why they dont' have any songs there. Oh well.
Loudside.com They have links to free music videos, streams and other stuff.

All the above is totally legal, and generally encouraged so they can get your money. :D
