is it okay to leave an air compressor pressurized?

Yep, at least that size. Now starting a 200 Horse compressor under load might be a problem, depending on model! 😉

I don't know anyone who depressurizes them after use...I imagine that's what they're made for. 😉

Yes.

But out of habit, you should open the lowest pet cock (valve) you can to drain out any condensation.

Besides that, it is alright to leave it pressurized.

I wouldn't for an extended time. The condensation inside the tank will rust it out. If you plan to use it again in the next day or two its not a problem.

So what you are telling me is that my 20 year old 5 HP 60 gallon compressor has already failed and is no longer useful because I have left it pressurized for all 20 years? Strange, because I used it just this afternoon to blow off some differential parts I was assembling.

I don't bother to depressurize any of the ones we have around the farm, except for once in a great while (to open the bleed valves). We've got an impressive redundant air compressor system in one of my uncle's quansets. I'm *thinking* that they're 200 gallon each, but I'm not sure. One on the right side of the shop, one on the left... pipes for drops the entire length of the shop. If one of them goes down, there are also valves to have one compressor power all of the shop drops. 🙂

hehe It's funny when some unsuspecting kid walks up and pulls the pressure relief switch on one of the tanks... hahaha That happened one time, scared the crap out of him!

I always release it. It's harder on the hose to leave it pressurized, common sense there.

wouldn't want to have a blow out😉

we have one of the valves set to where it slowly leaks that way it will depressurize itself.

Condensation=rust
