i've heard for some time that oriental:asian is basically like eskimo:inuit, but sherepunjab seems to have an interesting argument. it's true, the term asian goes far beyond those who are commonly referred to as asians, so why do they have the monopoly on the term? what does oriental translate into that would make it offensive enough to be replaced? this isn't flamebait, i'm honestly curious.

because the term "oriental" is mainly used for objects and not people. ... in the past....when asians were made fun of by caucasions, they would call us orientals and treat us as if we were some form of object..ever since then....it stuck....and became offensive....kinda how u don't call an african-american a "negro" (sorry for posting that word)

yeah..hehe there u have it 🙂

Reference 2

I am not saying I find it offensive, though I am half Japanese. I just wanted to make it clear that it's not a commonly accepted term for people of that particular area.
For example, "negro" isn't itself a bad word; it means "black" in Spanish. But to call a black person a negro is a good way to start a fight.

doubt it. I've seen orientals eating that before, and they haven't knocked over. of course i've seen them eating roaches, spiders, and maggots too, so maybe they're different.

i bet indians eat some nasty stuff too

most people love indian food.....yeah we eat some nasty food as well..ever heard of spam...or....mcdonalds?....'nuff said....and enough of these ignorant remarks on other country's food....

and amnesiac's on a role in finding these things...read what he wrote..they're go more in depth to what i've said in my earlier posts in this thread

cuz that's an old word...and old words kinda stick u knw? cuz even for me, it'll be wierd to call them asian rugs...it's ok to use "orient~" like "orient express" and stuff like that.......just as long as you don't call asian people as a whole orientals...then ur fine 🙂

Not the shells, just the tail. I've tried the shell before and I don't like that.

For me, I would eat the whole shrimp, shell, tail, and all, if it's grilled long enough. It depends how it was cooked.

blah. it must be an american thing. Back in the europe using the word "oriental" in reference to a person is perfectly fine. I guess here it picked up a different tone....

And "asians" ecnompasses the caucasian russians that live in the easter part of the country... so it is wrong

Well using the word "Asians" for Mongoloid peoples makes you sound, well, dumb.

Russians, Afghans, Pakistanis, Indians are Asians as well. As are Iranians, and other parts of the "M.E." a.k.a. West Asia.

It's still correct.
Using "Oriental" is neither acceptable nor correct.

Using Asian is incorrect and unacceptable as far as I'm concerned. I'm sick and tired of being grouped with you because my ancestors came from the same continent.

This whole debate is kind of funny. I mean, millions of years ago we all probably originated on the same continent. We're all the same race (ie the human one) and it's silly to get so bent up about things like this. I don't even know what countries my ancestors originated in, and it's not really that important to me. *shrug*

I guess its like rap songs. I love some rap songs and can sing the entire song until they say the "N" word.

Then, I have to stop for fear of getting my a55 kicked if i don't.

😕

mind u...saying "orientals" is ofensive to a lot of us "orientals".....and no we don't eat spiders maggots and roaches....those are just crazy people from any culture who wants attention.....that was not a great comment to post here at all....now apologize

sorry for orientals. But if you've seen Wild On series (E!) or the Discovery channels, it isn't just regional, it is in Thailand, Laos, as well as in China. My Phillipino friend openly admits to eating dog, and he said it is very common. My Vietnamese friends eat parts of cats. What do you mean it is for attention?

an indians eat and wipe their ass with the same bare hands. oops did i say that out loud?

lol. some people just may be too sensitive.

rotflmao

that is a very close analogy since the shrimps exoskeleton is also made of cacium...thats all you are gettin when you eat the shell

I personally eat the shell....i like the crunchiness 😛

Well, whenever I order the Oriental Chicken from the Chinese Kitchen...

But, seriously, you guys must be hard up for seafood where you are. Eating the tail, to me, seems like eating the tail of a cow, because not eating it would be wasteful! Where I'm from, we eat steamed shrimp by the pound, and we definitely don't eat the tails, or the shell!

I'm right off the Puget Sound, so not hard up for seafood at all. Just removing the tails is a lot of work that is pointless if the tail has nutritional value. 🙂

Lol, I think most people would eat whatever that is offered to them if they were starving. Since Asia has such a huge population density, some people always had to eat outside the norm, and sooner or later their style will merge with the mainstream. Whatever that taste good 😉

Btw, I'm Asian, and I don't think Oriental is in any way derogatory. In fact, I consider it quite useful, since it's helpful in classification. I guess if someone uses it in a slanderous manner then I might take offense, but it's rare already to hear it spoken anymore. Well, this is coming from a guy who finds the eye thing that little kids do to make fun of Orientals amusing, so... eh 🙂

I'm right off the Bay. When we eat blue crabs, we don't just eat them whole, shell and all, whether the shell has any nutritional value or not, regardless of whether it's a lot of work or not. If you like it, that's cool; just don't say that you eat the shell because it's good for you, or because it's too much work. 😛
