Is it OK to use openNIC's DNS servers?

I'm using openNIC's DNS server for my personal machine and it's working a lot faster than my school's DNS servers. 🙂 I'm just wondering if there's a flip side to it?

What is openDNS anyway? Surprisingly, Google didn't provide any useful info.

Is it okay to use them:

The OpenNIC membership has voted explicitly to reject ICANN's introduction of the collider TLD .biz, and does not recognize .biz domain names registered through ICANN registrars. By introducing a collider TLD, ICANN has brought instability into the domain name system; see the FAQ entry on the .biz dispute for more info.

Currently, the OpenNIC operates the .indy, .geek, .null, .oss, and .parody Top Level Domains. OpenNIC also cooperatively operates the shared TLD .glue, which is shared among alternative domain name systems.

Can I register .com/.net/.org domain names through the OpenNIC?

No. The OpenNIC provides a democratically goverened alternative to the traditional Top-Level Domain registries; we do not register non-OpenNIC Top Level Domains, such as .com, .net, and .org.
However, you may register an OpenNIC Top Level Domain, such as .indy, .geek, .null, .oss, or .parody; please see http://www.opennic.unrated.net/tlds.html for a list of whom to contact. It has it's pros and cons. It's up to you to make the choice🙂

LOL I thought I was the only one who use 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2 to ping/dig against. I swear to god, if those boxes ever go dark, the Internet will collapse 😉

I'm now using some random ISP's DNS server in Los Angeles with awesome respond times 😀

Install a dns resolver like djb's dnscache on a unix machine on your LAN. The ping time will be great. 🙂
