Is it ok to use an OEM on this machine?

Hi, i have an OEM of MS XP home that came with my notebook. A few months back my notebook was stolen, but i still have the OEM version of XP. Can i use it with the PC i am making?
Thanks
😀

You wont' be able to activate it since your stolen notebook is still using the same OS. If you have the proof of purchase, call MS and ask them if you can still use it w/ a diff. key.

I think technically, your cd is useless since it can only be used for your stolen notebook (that's what OEM is for). But you never know what MS will say. Good luck.

those on newegg are microsoft oem versions not ones made computer manufacturers such dell and gateway.

the ones on newegg, if they're from microsoft are legit. the others such as dell and gateway again are probably not.

While you have the CD, your license was stolen along with your notebook... (yes, I agree this sucks)

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

So, OEM XP home will be. Because i can get a Dell or alike OEM, should i avoid EBay and go with Newegg? Where do you guys usually get yours?
🙂

Install it using your OEM disk. Hopefully it won't ask you to enter a key during setup.

After you have installed it, you'll be asked to activate. Just call microsoft and they will give you an activation ID. No questions asked!

After making a $836 mistake trying to save some money on 11 copies of XP Home for a company, I've learned my lesson and always buy from a reputable reseller like Newegg. Side note, American Express is excellent in getting $$ back from scam companies.

Wait a second. Are you saying that even if he owned the retail version of XP he would have to endorse the thief as the new owner by not re-using it?
