Is it ok to tell a professor that you have A.D.D.?

go to the Dr.
ask about Adderal {sp.}

more for adults than ritilan.

a coworker takes it,it seems to help him,and i can tell if he forgets to take it for a few days,
he zones out a Lot.
Then i will ask him quietly if he took his "vitamins"😉

I have lived most of my life in "The Zone",lol, the prof probably already knows.

ADD's such a sham. Have you read the DSM IV diagnostic criteria? Any kid who doesn't want to do school work behaves that way.

I disagree,I often have trouble concentrating and staying on task with things I WANT very much to do.

I've had college students with ADD. It helped me to understand that beforehand although most did not need any special assistance.

To all talking against A.D.D.:

How the fvck do you know the way a person with A.D.D. feels? If you don't have it, STFU. The dude certainly was honest with his professor and he did the right thing.

ADD and ADHD are overly-used phrases in our culture. many people throw about disorders, especially physological disorders, as a sort of badge of achievement. if you casually drop "i have add" into a conversation most people would tend to not take you seriously. it is important to bring this up in proper context for it to actually effect your relationship.
ADD and ADHD also happen to be overly-diagnosed in our culture.

Yeah but it's annoying the way people bash this guy for saying he has A.D.D. Although our culture/science may tell us otherwise, we can't know how a person with A.D.D. feels... I don't have A.D.D. btw.

My friend was told by his doc along time ago he had a.d.d. it was just his excuse to do what he wanted. Lots of people have a hard time doing someth8ing maybe cause they're lazy, and maybe they just have no attention span and need to work on it, but I don't think at all it should be used in as a crutch. just accept it and work on it. Only difference is that if your doc says you have it, than you have an excuse to let your mind wander(you have a.d.d. after all!) for those that don't have their doc diagnose them have no excuse, they're just lazy

i know many students with A.D.D. do just fine in class, hate it when people use A.D.D. as an excuse, if u got this condition, then u better work your ass to overcome it like any other students with the same condition, stop the bitching.

there was a blind person in my math class and he does just fine without bitching and whining. A.D.D. is not even in the same leauge on the degree of severness compared to blindness. life is tough, just suck it up, deal with your so called "disability" and stop whining to the prof and using it as an excuse.

True. It's difficult some days, but when an ADDer is serious about getting something done, he usually makes it happen without help or other special accomodations.

Thank you. At this point, I'm going to duck out without reading any more useless commentary from anyone who doesn't understand the real lives of ADDers who work hard and make every attempt in life NOT to stand on "some diagnosis" like a crutch.

Not according to the NIH.
What studies are you looking at to make that claim?

People talk about it like it's a disease... it's not... it's a disorder just like the name says. People are different, their minds work differently... some of it has to do with their personality, some of it may be learned through childhood. I find it difficult to concentrate on things I'm not interested in... I also find it difficult to concentrate on things I am interested in when I have other things on my mind. I can overcome that by focusing on what I'm doing... not to say I'm superior to anyone else, but maybe other's don't have the mental ability to control what they think about, so they're put on drugs. Soon something like ADD becomes a fad and everyone who has trouble concentrating, or just doesn't want to uses ADD as an excuse and expects to be treated differently.

You can see it on an MRI - So, it is not .

I wasn't referring to ADD in general (my sister has a VERY sever case of it), just this case in particular. It just seems as if he was trying to pass it off as a scapegoat.

Agreed

This is the thought process of a person with ADD:

Instructior is writing a new problem on the board from his notes
-
I wonder why he puts it on green paper
-
Does he have to buy his own green paper or does he get it from the college?
-
How much money does the college spend on paper every semester?
-
...and so on.

My shrink says this is not normal..hmm......

It would have been smarter to tell your professor at the start of the year, but I don't see what's wrong with telling your professor you have ADD.

So I had to miss class because I got into a car accident.. I emailed my professor and, while apologizing for missing class and for not handing in an assignment due that day, passingly mentioned that I had A.D.D. and have been having a hellish semester... Was that a good idea? I'm not asking for a handout and told her that I understand if she has to mark me down...I just wanted her to understand that I'm not lazy but am just having a difficult semester.. Good move or will it screw me over?

edit: I mentioned the A.D.D. because I have been pretty vacant in class and the accident was caused by me being zoned out on the road.. I've been doing my assignments but they've all been kinda late and I've been a ditz in class too..

Lets go ride bikes!

Actually, that process seems entirely normal to me AND doesn't bother me a bit. By the time he finished writing that on the board I would have deduced how much the college spent on paper 😛 and the problem itself. If you knew me in real life, you'd know this to be true.

But on topic: I hate all this excuse-making. Blind and crippled people run marathons. Certainly those with "ADD" can read a book...

As far as your question about whether or not you should of told your prof... I see no reason for you not to, especially as you aren't expecting the Prof to make an accomodation for you. If you were/are, then you need to go through your school's channel for managing disability accomodations.
