Is it ok to tell a professor that you have A.D.D.?

So I had to miss class because I got into a car accident.. I emailed my professor and, while apologizing for missing class and for not handing in an assignment due that day, passingly mentioned that I had A.D.D. and have been having a hellish semester... Was that a good idea? I'm not asking for a handout and told her that I understand if she has to mark me down...I just wanted her to understand that I'm not lazy but am just having a difficult semester.. Good move or will it screw me over?

edit: I mentioned the A.D.D. because I have been pretty vacant in class and the accident was caused by me being zoned out on the road.. I've been doing my assignments but they've all been kinda late and I've been a ditz in class too..

Nope...Got into an accident and have been a wreck myself lately.. Think my A.D.D. come back hardcore since I started a new diet... Hard to explain but I sometimes feel like I'm going to faint.. Not having a good month...

Well, usually professors won't do anything unless it is medically diagnoised and you discussed your issue with him / her at the beginning of the semester.

I don't see it as a bad thing, but pretty irrelevant IMO unless it's a serious (hinderance) factor in your schooling

i hate people with ADD/ADHD.

i on the other hand have chronic fatigue syndrome (aka i'm a lazy bastard) so you should make special concessions for me

You absolutely did the right thing. FYI my wife is a college professor, and one of the most frustrating things for her is when students have "mystery" problems. If a professor does not know you have an issue, then you cannot either get help or perhaps some slack if your performance slips.

go to the Dr.
ask about Adderal {sp.}

more for adults than ritilan.

a coworker takes it,it seems to help him,and i can tell if he forgets to take it for a few days,
he zones out a Lot.
Then i will ask him quietly if he took his "vitamins"😉

I thought there was no such thing a ADD?
Just hyper people?

That is true. I used to be classified as "ADD" then they finally figured out I had some learning disabilities and helped me accordingly.

oh man, I had some "ADD" kids in our class. the professor hated them because they would use it as a disability and get unlimited time on tests.

ADD is not a disability. As someone who was diagnosed with it as a child, I personally think it's a hoax.

thank God there are still people who feel this way.

I've been diagnosed with ADD by two different doctors, and I know I have it because I zoned out like a motherfvcker whenever I had a boring class. This was especially bad in Spanish in high school, and in programming courses in college.

Finally I learned to buck up and MAKE myself pay attention instead of whining like a little baby and going on stimulant pills to keep me focused.

The only major problem I had after that was severe hypercyclic depression which resulted in my almost killing myself a couple times, but I dug myself out of that ditch without medication too. Haven't had any problems for 2 years.

Eh,
I'm tired of people that do not believe in A.D.D... I'm not hyper.. I zone out, get into car accidents, fall asleep in class, etc. etc... I ran out of ritalin this week and guess what - got into a car accident... I got straight Ds without ritalin now get straight Bs (I don't study more, just absorb more).. whatever... you guys could not believe in it even though EKGs and other test prove otherwise...

EDIT: I'm not registered with the school as disabled because I don't feel disabled in any way.. Some kids get extra time on tests, etc. but I find that I finish tests an hour ahead of most people BECAUSE I have a.d.d. (our minds work quicker not slower so I don't understand why we need more time).. In other words, I'm not using it as an excuse to be lazy and hate that assumption.. In fact, a professor (who now teaches at the prestigious Oxford english department) once had a conference with me - she said that she knows that I work 10x's harder than anyone else in the class yet I can't seem to do well on tests... All of my creative papers received A+s (she suggested getting a few of my pieces published) yet I sucked at studying.... I was not lazy and still did poorly.. so screw you guys...

ADD's such a sham. Have you read the DSM IV diagnostic criteria? Any kid who doesn't want to do school work behaves that way.

Yep. I've had the exact same depression problem myself as well (although I never tried suicide even when I felt like I wanted to, probably because I had anxiety as well), but I got out that without medication too, although it wasn't easy.
All I can say is that life is hard. You can go through it looking for excuses and easy quick fixes or you can accept responsibility, buck up and make the best of it.

I'm not a doctor, but I do trust doctors. If they diagnose me with an illness (and they have) then I will do the best I can to deal with it. Usually their help makes things better. A lot of people don't understand and/or don't care. I don't care about them to much because I have my own problems to deal with.

Do the best you can and if you need help ask for it.

if you have ADD get it on record with your school and they can inform the professor and also provide you with any necessary help. Of course you will need medical verification.

If this is college, then you need to pay the student disabilities services a visit. Unless you do, most professors don't have any reason to treat you differently.

Unfortunately, if your college is big, then SDS might not give a crap. No offense, but they are justified in this. You can't use such a pithy thing like this as an excuse. No one says you have to go to college. If you can't hack it, you need to leave.
