I'm not sure I got an answer.
What do you think of the VMWARE IPO? Do you think it will be as good as Google?

i play primarily on the OTC and not the big boards however my ex who is in the IT field and whose company uses VMware, thinks it will be a great investment.
I heard VMWare IPO is gonna be one of the hotter IPO in recent months. All those investors are looking for the next Google and VMWare is a matured technology with both AMD/Intel coming out with virtualization to support it, boosting demand for VMWare's technology.
But personally, I am not sure if VMWare is gonna sell like hotcake. I have used it, like it, nice toy, but don't find the need for it. I haven't seen large companies deploying it, and I don't see anyone putting mission critical softwares on virtual servers anytime soon.
So I guess what I am saying is, VMWare might get priced pretty high with potential to go up in value because of the market hype. But I don't think their fundamental is very sound yet, because their technology is not widely adopted. It has potential, but until the potential is realized, I don't think it will be profitable enough to justify its valuation. And if it doesn't grow profit like the investors expect it to in the long run, the price will eventually come down.
Just my 2 cent.

Is that a good thing or not?
Is Microsoft's VirtualPC2007 supposed to compete with vmware? VirtualPC2007 is free but only runs on Vista which limits the user base. Is this Viridian the full featured virtualization solution from Microsoft?
Heh, do you trust microsoft to run other OS within it's OS or vice versa? VirtualPC2007 has the same idea as WMWare, but it won't support as many OS as completely as VMWare. Plus VMWare has been in the industry for a long time, and it's technology is proven. There is no competition there.

I've been straddling the fence also trying to decide if I should try to get some shares on the 14th should Fidelity lets me buy some at IPO price. On the one hand they've had some interesting revenue growth the past two years. On the other hand, they're not a brand name like google and they'll face increased competition from other companies like Microsoft in the near future.

Virtual PC 2007 (which runs on XP by the way) is the MS counterpart to VMware Workstation. The VMware product is considerably better (USB support, snapshots, ability to run non-MS OS's). Though if you don't need those features, VPC seems to work pretty well.
Viridian is Microsoft's answer to VMware Server and ESX Server. The theory is that MS shops will just use the built-in Viridian virtualization in Server 2008, since it's already there, ready to go, and works well enough. Linux has an abundance of free server virtualization options that work decently, but their enterprise management tools blow compared to the VMware's. That could change quickly though.
I'm not sure what the marketshare split looks like between workstation products and server products, or for that matter if VMware is even going to lose any ground, nor do I know anything about IPO's, but I'm not sure if I'd bet on VMware as a sure thing.

Buy Nasdaq PowerShares (QQQQ) currently trading in the mid 40s. It's doubled over the last few years. If you believe the Nasdaq is heading back up you'll make money.

Heh. I bought my first QQQQ shares back in 2001 when they traded around 60 a share. I was expecting a quick rebound in the tech industry.... which didn't happen. I'm STILL waiting to make my money back on those stocks SIX years later
Both the Dow Diamonds and S&P 500 Spiders that I bought around the same time have outperformed them by a wide margin over the past five years.

Heh, you should look outside of the US. Try ETF's like EWZ, EWW. Even the ones in developed country like EWD is doing well.
VMWare faces stiff competition from Xen and other open sourced hypervisors that use far less system resources. VMWare is just junk. Plus M$ is ready to play hardball. I would avoid them. While VMWare is still popular and a good choice for some, I think it's one of those companies that can tank any moment.

I love VMWare's product, but now that they're getting competition they're being forced to give away some of their key products like VMWare Server to maintain their marketshare. I don't see this getting any better now that Microsoft and Red Hat are building "free" virtualization into their server products.
Investing in VMWare seems about as smart as investing in Netscape ten years ago. The price is probably going to spike up quickly, but their profits are going to dry up fast once they get some serious competition from larger companies giving their virtualization products away for free.
