Is it ok to put deposit down for a new car?

Hell no, especially not on an Accord. Just go to the dealer that has that color in stock.

I was asked to do that with my current car as I special ordered it from the factory, but it was only $500. They also never actually charged me for it so I guess it was just a "safety net" for the dealer (although they'd never have had a problem selling the car I bought).

no thats stupid, i have a deposit for the next 911 GT3 and it was only $1K. However if you really want to do it, agree on the price ahead of time and GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING (see below)

nice choice! deposits are refundable by law in CA too so a CA deposit really doesnt mean a ton

When I've had to put deposits down on cars it's been either $500 or $1,000. $4,000 is absurd, especially for a Honda.

Way too high - I put 1k down on my stingray and even that was refundable (and it was ordered from the factory). I wouldn't put anything down on an accord. Frankly, there are too many Honda dealers that you can work with that will get you what you want. Just find another one!

I just bought a 2016 Accord EX-L V6 and so far I'm really happy with it. Feels kinda weird for such a large family car to have some balls. I'm coming from a 2005 Neon SRT-4 so it's a huge upgrade in technology and quality. Not even used to the size of the vehicle yet.

yeah that is crazy... i bought a new bmw and only put 500, even my acura tsx was 500 deposit. You need to find new dealers. or try the online dealers, that truecars.com website

Let me join the chorus-my wife just ordered a new Toyota-the maximum deposit the dealer would allow (on a credit card, for the points) was $3,000. In fact, the salesman initially put the charge through at $500 which is what most people do. And this was a car being transferred from another dealer out of state.

BTW the printed form purchase contract every dealer around here uses specifically states deposits are NON-refundable, so read it carefully.

OTOH, around here Honda dealers are so tight I swear they would charge admission to their showrooms in they thought they could get away with it. They were the first here with the addon fee for running the paperwork to the DMV, and the first to make it mandatory.

I put a deposit down for a truck but it wasn't a crazy amount. Only reason I did it was cause someone else was eyeing the truck as well. In the end I got my deposit back and I got my truck as well.

I'd simply tell that dealer that you'll work with another dealer to acquire what you want. They'll either become more reasonable or they won't. I would suspect they'd be far more interested in making a deal than turning away business, but sometimes you never know.
