No, it is generally not okay to eat roadkill... Even if you hit the animal yourself.

Give me some factual evidence of this statement. Where I live there are probably several hundred deer hit on roads. Most are gutted right away wrapped in cheesecloth taken home skinned and eaten. More damage to the deer with a rifle bullet than a truck because of the non penitrating aspect of the kill.

I've been eating medium rare steaks ever since I could chew. Hell, we always had medium burgers growing up. I've never had food poisoning from beef.

I suppose I could have been a little more clear. If you hit a deer, and are equipped to gut it on the spot.. have at it. ;)

The unsmashed portions of road-killed Bambi are just as yummy as the unshot portions of capped Bambi.
Where I live deer are a pest, and I've chowed on several over the years that suicided by car.
So long as they are fresh go for it.
