Well, I really don't believe in any sort of biblical god type character, but I believe in things like karma and the golden rule

Well that's more a moral thing than belief in the supernatural. Both of those are basically "Do unto others...", which is the principal at the heart of modern morality.

I think karma is somewhat supernatural, but as to what is "keeping tabs" I have no idea.

Concepts like Karma and Golden Rule are not actually mystical or supernatural. Neither is "You reap what you sow" (which is the Judeo-Christian verson of karma).
There is, I am aware, a popular perception that Karma is a kind of punishment from the gods, but that is not factual according to Hindu/Buddhist religions.
They're really just statements of fact. If you plant corn kernels, you'll grow corn. If you treat people badly, they'll treat you badly in return. Etc. In a very real way, you create the world you live in with your daily actions, and the individual becomes the sum of his actions and choices.
