Is it not uncommon for engagement rings to break?

My wifes engagement Ring I bought her 5 years ago broke. A few of the diamonds fell out. Went to some different jewelers and there is no way to fix the ring. The cheapest thing we can do is buy a new setting which is around $900+. The ring cost me over $3000 new and I found it surprising that it broke 5 years later. Luckily the main diamond is intact, but the band needs to replaced which is a bummer.
 
WTF. A gold ring is ~$100. Plop in the diamonds, and you are good to go. Where did the $1500 come from? Did you lose some diamonds?

My wife's ring had one prong break during cleaning. When the jeweler gave it back we looked and a small diamond was missing. 5 minutes later, the jeweler found the diamond in the cleaning solution, and had the ring repaired.
 
The white gold settings were around $900 but the platnium settings were more. Yes some small baguettes fell out.

The setting is not a solitaire style ring. That is why the setting costs considerably more than $100.
 
The setting she has, has a lot of baguettes. Settings with baguettes cost considerable more than solitaire settings.
 
I agree with dullard. I just bought a ring and the simple platinum setting was only $500. Over $900 for a white gold setting seems extraordinarily high.

Platinum setting for baguettes <$400.

Jewelers tend to be the least trustworthy of all occupations in my opinion. I'd rather trust a carnival game operators with my money than most jewelers. Their 75% off sales still are higher prices than you can get just by going into a different store.

Unless you custom build your setting, it shouldn't run you much more than $400 for platinum. Even then, they are still taking a standard style and making a minor modification.
 
Thanks for the link, but her old setting has over .50 in baguettes and is styled totally different from that ring.

It is VERY important that you have the settings checked and secured by a jeweler at least once a year, although twice a year is recommended.....simple chore to avoid costly consequences.

dude, those tiny little baguettes are worthless, just accept the fact that you ovepaid and get something from a reputable dealer at a more reasonable price. don't most jewelers warranty their rings with lifetime guarantee?

You didn't insure it?!? That's an expensive piece of portable hardware which could easily be lost, stolen, or in your case, damaged. Crazy mang, crazy. Insure that sucka when you're done fixing it!
 
Please insure that ring! Ours is covered by our apt. insurance which is a reasonable $25/month. Oh I almost forgot: Some obnoxious statement that assumes a bunch of shiat and is insulting for no specific reason.

Yeah, every 6 months is the requirement to keep the insurance.
 
My wife has had no problems with her ring, but the jeweler we bought from guarantees the ring, and will replace missing diamonds, if it breaks. They will replace the solitaire once, and any smaller accent type diamonds whenever needed.
