Is it normal to not have any sympathy at all?

At work I do alot of interviews with people who have suffered domestic abuse, and a co-worker was talking about how bad this ladies situation was, and I didn't feel bad.

It's not that I don't care, because I love my job, it's that I experience zero emotion.

Do I need therapy?

Normal for humans in general? No.
Normal for someone who works in the industry, sees it day in and day out? Yes, perfectly normal.

You're probably just desensitized. You've seen it and dealt with it so much that it doesn't phase you like it once did.

zero emotion... part of that comes with you just being a man.

Don't put us all under the same label. Just because men don't show their emotions as often and easily as women doesn't mean we don't have them.

You misunderstand me. We don't show them; doesn't mean we don't have them. Some of us just have a little more...restraint.

But personally, I'm just a little dead inside. But that's by no means the social norm.

It's not normal. You have lost your ability to relate to humans.

A question for you, would you scam some people for money if you knew it was easy to pull it off and get away with it?

Boys rule and girls drool.

Also, there's nothing wrong with being a soulless automaton, as long as you use your discretion.

Hence why I said, "part of that comes from you just being a man"
I realize men, in general, aren't emotional zombies, but they do tend to show less emotion than women.

lol, lost emotion? Bullshit. I can easily get some emotion out of you, let me stab you ;) You'll get super angry. That is an emotion! :p You also will get sad when you marry someone and they die. (Probably) So, no, you are not dead inside... You just right now don't care. Oh, and it helps if you care.

It's called being a republican.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

But basically in a job like that you have to build up some defenses or you'd drive yourself crazy. Speaking from experience, you need to maintain just enough empathy to want to help them without clouding your judgment or your ability to function.

Faking sympathy is extremely hard when you really don't care...

Maybe working in a inbound new claim center for an insurance company killed off my emotion, but I am with OP on this one. When I hear about somebody whose home was destroyed, I just think "that sucks, hope they had insurance" and don't really think about it.

I looked at the three forms of sociopathy and I don't have any of the symptoms, I mean I have SOME of them but not even close to getting a big minority.

I guess I'm just desensitized...

Either way I find it all very fascinating so I don't think I'm in the wrong occupation =)
