Is it normal for kittens to cry a lot?

My friend just got an 8 week old kitten this past weekend. She has gotten supplies for him. She got him food, toys, and a litter box. She is going to get him a bed and scratching post later. The kitten has had it's shots and checks out fine. However, she tells me that the kitten won't stop crying. It doesn't matter what time of the day or night. I figured it was just because the kitten was in a new home and new environment. Is this normal? If so, how long does it usually continue? If it is not normal, what could be the problem? Thanks.

I think its normal...my kittens did that for the first two days...but then stopped.

It could be she's lonely.
try placing a clock under whatever she sleeps so she hears the ticking.
It helps sometimes.

If it continues for another few days, you might want to go get her checked up anyhow just in case.
Kittens are very sensitive to sickness. 🙁

<<It probably misses its mother. Breast feed it.>>

Hence the clock...it mimics a heart beat for kittens and also many other animals and helps them sleep.

Well CRAP!! I forgot where I was asking this. I was hoping someone would give some constructive advice. Later.

Well I had a kitten that used to cry like that to but it happened to be only because it was alone at night and wasn't comfortable so I opened my door when I was sleeping and the kitten would sleep right by my head.. almost choked on the poor bastard a few times but at least he wasn't whining anymore 😀

Yeah, my grandmom's cat cried a lot too when she was a kitten. The clock worked. Put it in a sock and put it in the kitten's bed.

Am I the only one who feels horrible for the kitten?

I'm assuming this is your friend's first kitten (since she got supplies), so I'd suggest getting one more thing: another kitten. Not only will it help out your friend (kittens get crazy), it will provide a buddy for the kitten as well.

I don't think it's fair to have a pet and not have someone or something to keep it company.

Yes, kittens need a crapload of "snuggles and love". A friend of mine bought a kitten and returned it the next day cause it kept her up all night. If I didn't already have two at the time I would have taken it (almost did). They calm down after a little while; I mean try and think how fun it must be to get ripped out of a cage with other snuggly kittens and your only entertainment is some owner who doesn't give you enough attention?

I actually second descartes on this one...i got two cats for this reason...cause one would be lonely. I never regretted it even though its been a lot more of a hassle to take care of two cats. (Now three) They love to play with one another and can keep each other entertained for hours. So i too would recommend getting another kitten as the best solution.

Especially because the kittens are usually taken from their mothers earlier than they should be.. they are just like babies.. they crave attention and shouldn't be left alone or neglected, start ignoring it after 10 to 12 (after they are mature) weeks and keep it up.. then the cat will become an attention whore and you will have raised the perfect cat..

i've got a cat thats an attention whore just to me and is deafly frightened of anyone else including its actual master my GF!
:Q

the thing loves me to death and always jumps up on my shoulder and tucks its head under my chin while i'm on the comp.

Thanks guys. I'll pass along the suggestion. She has questioned whether or not it was the right thing to get this kitten. I hate to see her give him up so soon, that's why I am trying to figure out a solution. Yes, this is her first kitten. Although, she has had some dogs in the past.

When I got Banshee he cried nonstop at first. It's pretty scary being away from home for the first time, and away from familiar surroundings, especially at such a young age.

As others have suggested, a companion would help greatly, and the two could be lifelong friends.

Other than that, it will take time for the little one to adjust. Have your friend spend plenty of time playing with and petting the kitten, so they develop a bond, and then the kitten won't feel so insecure.
