I will treat that's a joke if it happens for short period.

What if someone pretends opposite gender for extended period?

As a woman, I feel that sometimes it's "safer" for us to pretend to be male or just not mention gender at all. Who wants to open themselves up for flaming about how we're just guys pretending to be female for the attention? Or that if they're female, they obviously can't be technologically intelligent (or intelligent at all)? Or get some crazed whacko try to track us down in real life and harass or hurt us (it happens, albeit rarely)?

Gender should be totally irrelevant except in one obvious case. Certain aspects of those two genders should play a role in real-life (you don't let a woman do the heavy stuff with a construction project), but on the Internet, gender is totally irrelevant.

But since many seem to care whether the other person is male or female, I'd say: choose the gender which is the safest one to be on that specific site/board or in that specific (IRC) channel. Safety first ;)

Hmmm, interesting point there Ladi. I wonder if any males pretending to be females on here have been tracked down? That'd kinda be funny.
But I really don't see any point to a internet sex change. It's probably that some people are curious about how they would be treated if people thought they were the opposite sex. There aint nothing morally wrong with it only that it's a bit weird. I am bothered about what other people want to potray themselves as on here because I'd like a bit of honesty.

If it comes to the point where you have to pretend you are the opposite sex, maybe it is time to re-evaluate your life. You need to ask yourself why are you spending so much time on the internet that your own sex has become boring and you feel the need to be someone else.

<< No, as long as the gender bending doesn't get weird & start playing with folks emotions >>

Absolutely - couldn't have said it better myself.

I don't see an issue with pretending to be the opposite sex yet maintaining your own personality (although I don't personally see a need to do that - I'm happy with what I am and could care less if others on a BBS think more or less of me because of my gender). When you start fabricating a life for this person you've become and start drawing other members into it, especially if you have the illusion of being someone to trust, you've gone too far.

I think that since it is so easy to pretend about something your are not with just a few keystrokes, people nowadays with interent access are thinking... HEY WHY NOT!? I WANT TO BECOME A DOCTOR INSTEAD OF A MEDIOCRE JUNIOR HIGH STUDENT?

It is morally wrong because it falls under the integrity of the person and saying something he/she is not falls under lying. And that is one of the most unmoral things one could do.

The internet is still an extension to your voice. Just digitized. And whatever you say is just the same as actually speaking in front of the person themselves.

It doesn't bother me one bit until you get someone banned and tormented because he found you out.

Depends on the situation, if it was a temporary or joke but if your using it for various devious reasons then its sick and demented...

I also prefer to use females when picking models for multiplayer games, although I don't act as a "female" and tell everyone I'm a gamer chick.

What a topical subject. From today's latimes.com:

<< Emboldened Under Veil of Online Anonymity
Gold five years ago attended an online wedding involving two characters in a game called "Meridian 59." Once the vows were exchanged, the bride declared that she was actually a man and that the two had had cybersex, humiliating the groom in front of their virtual guests. It was all a revenge plot the "bride" had devised because the groom had killed another of the player's characters months earlier in the game.
What makes such behavior possible, of course, is the anonymous nature of the Web. Online players are less accountable for their words and, therefore, less inhibited with their expressions.
"The Internet makes you bolder," said Rick Hall, a game producer at Origin Systems, the company that created "Ultima Online." "If you're the type of guy who wouldn't approach a girl in real life, you can do it online. And if you get shot down, who cares."

I have to agree with Ladi.
Of the various forums that I read and post on, I post as a female on only two of them.

Hermaphrodites stand and be heard!!!!

And just because you made it as vague as possible, I doubt that is going to keep the mods out.

LocutusX: heh the female model in Q2 was harder to hit...any player worth their salt knew that.

Morals are different on the internet.
People that come in fresh and new and expect the world of computer geeks who have been around for years to be morally sound, you have something else coming to you.

Many poeple come to the internet to escape "real life" and its lame social implecations.
Some may say its hiding behind a monitor and its weak. But I see it as the same way someone will put up a front when they meet you, or lie to make themselves look better.

If your that offended by someone playing off as a women on the internet, then you should never read about the social experiments that psychologists put you and your family and friends through every day.
