Is it me, or is Twitter just dumb?

I'm the web manager for a non-profit and everyone is a buzz about twitter as of late. They want me to "twit" now, and I find the whole thing ridiculous - we just don't have enough content to post even hourly, and everything that we would post would be fluff.. Also, who reads these things?

My wife is also a community manager and calls twitter a great tool, while a friend of mine is so invested in Twitter that he founded a twitter award ceremony, called the Shorty Awards.

I ask you, techie nerds of the world, is twitter just a fad or do I have to adapt to this world of twitting?

I just signed our company up for twitter and am "tweeting" now because, as dumb as twitter is, getting fired for being seen as stubborn is dumber..

This shit is going to make me puke, actually..
 
i always thought it seemed stupid. self absorbed people who think everyone is just dying to know what they are up to at any given moment.

Do you think, once the fad dies down, it'll be a serious form of communication/knowledge sharing? Will we rely on it the way we rely on email/im/social networking apps?
 
You don't "twit", you "tweet".

And there's nothing to "get" - be it with Twitter or Facebook. They're just new ways to connect with people.

If you don't feel like participating, that's fine. It doesn't need to be "useful" information to be interesting.

Twitter's value is less about saying what you're doing and more about tracking the real time pulse of the internet as it relates to current or breaking events. Also it's a great two way communication tool for corporations to reach out to their customers about their brand

I don't even know what Twitter is. I heard about it maybe a year ago? and still haven't been interested in figuring out what it's for.


Considering that I've been twitless for however long it's been around and managed just fine thank you very much, I dub it unnecessary for the progression of the species.

Some dude in my WoW guild actually got direct help from Comcast due to something he posted on twitter. He said it was almost an immediate response. I read an article in Wired about it over the past week or so and it's true apparently Comcast is using it as a customer service medium so it's not all bad.

Same here. Funny thing is my work is in Information Technology and I cant navigate nor use Facebook\Myspace very well. I have one but check it once a month. I was asking my wife about Twitter. Some of these things I simply dont understand the appeal or use.

I don't disagree, but there isn't much difference in getting your news from CNN and discussing it on ATOT or PN than there is getting that same news from CNN and posting about it on twitter ;-)

Yeah, it's not for everyone and I'm not advocating that everyone join it, I'm just saying it does have some value and it can be used more than updating what you're doing at the moment

Plus i'm an 'ad man' so I can't get away with not knowing how to leverage the medium ;-)
 
Twitter kinda like the status update feature on Facebook... except I actually KNOW people who use Facebook.

I still hear people on podcasts like TWIT singing it's praises every week, though.I'd imagine it's useful for tech celebrities with thousands of fans, since they can ask their followers a question on Twitter and get back an answer instantly. Of course, they could do that on their Facebook page as well if they wanted to 🙂
