Thank god I'm graduating this year because my college is going to raise tuition again for the 4th time. From what I've heard the increase is going to be another GRAND! It's getting to the point that most middle class people will not be able to afford college.

Here's a little fact: President Bush attempted to change the rules for Pell Grant eligibility and block 84,000 potential students from receiving these grants. (New York Times, Nov. 21, 2003)

Yikes! :(

IMO everyone should have the opportunity to attend college, so they can get good paying jobs and so they can positively contribute to society. Studies have shown that college educated people make $10-15 thousand more a year than people with only a high school degree.

You can afford college depending on which school you choose to go to. I know my school makes sure you can go to the school if you're admitted, meaning they'll give you free money for wahtever you can't afford. And community colleges are always a cheap alternative.

To me college is just one long weeding out process to see who is allowed to go into what kind of vocational training.

Now that's a sweet deal.

But if college tuition continues to drastically increase I'm wondering if those type of programs would be eliminated?

I think it can only work for really rich private schools. Public schools will never be able to do it.

It's according to the person and what are their interest. Not everyone is college material and not everyone can excel at vocational school.

Of course. Funding would be an issue and that's my point. The rich students (5% of America) don't have to worry about college tuition and because they have the means to attend any school they want. They don't need financial help. It's the middle and/or lower class that I worry about. If they can't afford college tuition and programs are being cut and eliminated then where do they go?

I would say community college and looking for scholarships. It definitely isn't fair, but since the demand for college education rises, the prices rise just like anything else. besides, if yo'ure just kickass at school the colleges will throw money at you.

Yup. A few people I know are actually able to make money by going to the local semi-community college.

Man, what are your parents going to do? I bet it's hard for them to pay for your tuition AND rent (big boy is too big to live at home!)

My school is so cheap, if you're an in-state Georgia student you can get a great education at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Hope Scholarship pays all tuition. Unless you got other scholarships you have to pay room/board/fees/living expensives, but that's still very cheap compared to most schools. Hope is funded by the lottery.

EDIT: Middle class can definitely get a good education in Georgia. I know a few other states have something like Hope, maybe more should follow. Even without it you could make it but have loans.

College is great, but from a purely monetary standpoint even if everybody had it we'd still need somebody to work the cash register at walmart and clean streets. My home town has the highest per number of universities per capita east of montreal or something, and yet people with degrees still often get sh*t jobs, because the economy sucks, and just because you have a degree doesn't mean you won't be kissing ass to sell people tvs at futureshop (think best buy).

Tuition is getting outrageously expensive. I went Ivy, and was one of those lucky ones whose parents could afford it.

I made damn sure to graduate in four years. An extra 40k down the drain would have been inexcusable. I don't know if I'd send my future kids to an Ivy League or expensive private university. The cost seems way out of proportion to the benefit.

my parents are paying 14,000 a semester after everything has been deducted (scholarships, grants, loans). it's definitely not easy for them to pay for it and i know they would have had a lot easier time if I went to UW. But i guess it's just one big investment.
