Is it me or does Led Zepplin's albums suck compared to their live performances?

I was listening to the led zepplin dvd this morning really rockin' out and grooving along the songs and then right after i popped in my mp3's of their albums... wtf? The album version of some of these songs sound like some crappy boy band version of their live version which has a hard edge to it. ESPECIALLY the songs What Is And What Should Never Be, We're Gonna Groove and Bring it on Home. Anyone else notice this?

BTW, pick up the dvd, greatest. music. ever.

It is you. Led zepplins studio albums are fine.

however i notice this effect greatly with The Who. Live at leeds is sooo good. but what the hell is with their studio stuff?
reverse is true for the Stones. they are a disappointment live.

No seriously, compare the song "What is and what should never be" on the album to the dvd... the album version sounds like some brittney spears remix compared to the live dvd 😕

The live concerts are better IMHO, but the recordings were good too. They were trying to have it more clean on the recording, and then live they jsut took the songs to a different level. Look at phish for example, compare their live to album work.

I bet any fan would like the concerts better, but for some person just hearing them for the first time, they would probalby like the more clean and cut versions on the albums, people dont want to hear some 20 minute jam fest on the radio.

perhaps you should not be listening to mp3s of them... maybe you downloaded the britney remix 😉

yes the albums sound different from live. they should. but their albums are not bad in any way. Led Zepplin MP3 > you live.

Actually they sucked in concert. The "live" recordings have many many hours of sound engineering put into them. The first four albums rocked.

I've got tons of bootlegs, about 5 GB worth, not sound engineered, and they're quite good so....

I agree with bwnv, their live stuff isn't as good as the studio work. When I saw them live Jimmy Page was missing notes left and right.

I'm not disputing that a studio effort is obviously going to be perfect/better, but they certainly don't 'suck' live, as he implied.

well its kinda like comparing apples to oranges, i love zeppelin with all my heart and i recently saw Led Zeppegain @ House of Blues which was awesome, but they are GREAT live, How the West Was Won i think was an AWESOME DVD but their studio stuff is awesome too. Jimmy Page put on some good shows live but their studio stuff is just awesome too. i think its just a matter of taste, some people like studio stuff, some people like live stuff, me personally i like live stuff better but their studio stuff is just pure greatness also

It is you.

Remember that studio production techniques in the late 60s/early 70s were far inferior to what we have now. IIRC, Led Zeppelin I was a single-track recording, meaning that it's essentially a live studio album.
