Is it me or are people just stupid?

Tuesday evening I sent a memo via email to ALL faculty/staff and students. I told them I would be upgrading our mail server on Saturday and to expect an hour downtime and their password would be reset to a code everyone in the school knows about.

Why is it that I've received a handful of emails and a call this morning on my cellphone of people not able to get into their email account?! I gave them 3 days of notice and they still dont remember?! Oh, and yes they do check their email often since we have a strict policy on communicating via email as much as possible. Some ppl remember, but it pisses me off that I take the time to outline the changes and stuff and ppl just ignore/delete my message.

Ok, it's tuesday morning I better get to work!!!! Grrrr...not a good way to start off the week.

probably a communication error on your part.

You probably communicated the issue in terms of what YOU WANTED from them .....you should consider next time putting the issue in terms of what THEY WANT.

People in general dont care what you want, they care about what they want.... address that aspect of any issue and you will be amazed as to how much more responsive ppl are when THEIR WANTS are involved not yours!

I know what you mean, but how the heck was I going to make this an easy process? I'm migrating over 400+ user accounts and in the middle of it, I had to delete and rename tons of accounts. I said fvck it and just reset everyone's password to this special code.

It doesnt excuse the handful of people who chose not to read my emails whereas the other 300+ ppl who read it didnt have a problem. Then you call me and start sobbing cuz you cant send email to your husband? And never did I stated in my email that this is how it's going to be and that's it. I think their problem is that they want someone to hold their hand. Granted a something minor changes and they start whining about it.

welcome to the world of users and e-mail....

I work as an IT at a law firm and when we send out messages informing people of a change or something they have to do we get at least 5 people who "overlooked" or deleted our message. Then when their computer gets an error they whine to us. Fun Fun...

Just because people check their e-mail doesn't mean they actually read it. We experience this problem all the time at work... important office wide messages go out and half the people ignore it.

attaching a pic of Anna Kournakova with the proper subject line usually does the trick ;)

heehee..

after one of my "people are so dumb" rants here at work, a co-worker printed a shot of the 6th sense where the kid is telling Bruce Willis

"I see dumb people.. they're everywhere. They walk around like everyone else. They don't even know that they're dumb."

I don't get it, can anyone log into anyone else's account since they all have the same temp password?

That's definitely what it sounds like.

they may have a predetermined pattern, like <last name><last 4 digits of SS#>
or <employee ID><month>
or something, just because it is pre-known doesn't mean it is identical for everyone

I'd guess that it's each individuals' student ID or their social security #, not the same password for all users. If it is the same password for everyone, then the stupid award doesn't go to the users.

And considering that summer is almost over, and you sent the message out right before a 3 day weekend, I'm surprised you didn't get a lot more calls. Most people at my companies were on vacation and such. Plus your manager sorts never read email, that's why they have assistants. They expect to be catered to in any situation since they approve the $$. A dozen or so people out of 400 isn't too shabby.

Sadly it's not just emails. We have many signs posted about how to access our office and people still manage to come in the back way (wrong way).

Yes, most people are stupid, but this means that statistically you could be stupid yourself.

I laugh when someone goes on and on about how "stupid" people are because they witness random mistakes.

How bright would ANY of you look if someone followed you around with a camera and made a blooper reel about your life?

You gave them three days notice? Sheesh! Here if we gave faculty and staff a three day notice we would be strung up by our "short hairs".

For us, we give a customary 2 week notice and reminder e-mails two or three time plus posting the change/downtime on our website.

This is typical in an operations field. There are always going to be 5% of people who show up late, miss the memo, and who don't care until they can't get their work done then all of a sudden its a big problem on your part. Just tell them that they will have to be patient and that it will all be working right as soon as possible.

Why would I read company wide e-mails? They are invariably useless.
