Is it me, or are most tech jobs lenient?

My job... if I need to come in a few hours late or leave a few early, its not a big deal. Dress is very casual.

Is it me, or are most tech jobs like this?

yes - because every so often something catastrophic happens that requires you to work a few extra hours after or fix things that are unfix-able at a moments notice. Most companies will rather you have a stress free environment 90% of the time for then those 10% of the time when things go bad (and they always do) your able to focus and get the job done.

Yeah my dress code is business casual and I have never been talked to or reprimanded for coming in 10-15 minutes late.

Mine isn't, but I don't feel like explaining, and I'm sure that no one really cares anyway.

I never thought of it that way, but I'm sure it figures in as much as anything else. Good point.

I've always just assumed there's really no reason to put the nerds in suits. They have no personal client contact, so their dress has no impact on job performance, so why force them to spend $X on a dry-clean-only wardrobe? On timeliness, few deadlines are that hard - the work doesn't usually matter if it's done at 8:25 or 8:45, as long as it gets done.

Edit: my experience with service-oriented tech jobs (where workers are supplied by one company to another) ARE more concerned with image and punctuality, just as they should be.

I believe so, I'm wearing cargo shorts, flip-flops and a polo today. I think the sh!t really has to hit the fan for any reprimands around here.

Yeah, doesn't seem like anyone cares when I come in. I always get in early and leave late anyways though

As for dress, I don't think anyone cares. I wore a hoodie and jeans to work today.

I work my 8 hours (plus lunch hour) somewhere between 8am and 7pm and wear jeans, sandals, and a t-shirt to work everyday. No shorts are allowed for some reason.

I'm jealous, I can get away with shorts on friday, but I don't think I could get away with sandals and between the two I'd rather have sandals.

I think it's because at my location there are customers who come through the tech area for training, but never on fridays. The one or two times i covered a saturday shift I got to show up in tshirt, shorts, and sandals. It was great.

Yep, I have no complaints in that department. Thursday I'll be working from home. If I needed a reason to give to do it, I'd say because it might rain tonight and the roads could still be damp. IT rules.

We don't have to wear ties on Friday. That's about as lenient as it gets here.

That said, I don't have any complaints, the team I work with is awesome and as an added bonus, I can even tolerate my boss without getting angry. Tom if you see this, I meant to say "my boss rocks"

Jeans & nice shirt (collared or button-up at least). I think that a lot of tech jobs are lenient because they are screwed without you if something goes wrong, because if the computer systems go out a lot of other people's jobs can't happen. Everything is kosher as long as you deliver on your responsibilities.

I go to work and come home in pajamas. A normal day starts at 6am and ends sometime between 1pm and 6pm depending on where I am in the call cycle. I dont work in tech though.

Yeah like the occasional 2-hour lunches. :D

I did that plenty. PLENTY. Especially when I expected packages from Fedex to arrive at noon at my house. I would drive home just to open that CPU up and then gobble down a lunch.

I just made sure I stayed a little later to make up for that extra 1 hr. No biggie.

Are people where you live just too stupid to drive in rain, or am I missing something obvious here?

So true, at my job sometimes I wake up in the morning and I really don't feel like going and so I don't and I just make it up whenever I really feel like it, sometimes I feel like working 3 hours and calling it a day or maybe working a little bit and then going back home and finishing up, dress is business casual, office & development lab environment, everyone is chill and food + beverage is plenty, 5 minute commute Engineering FTW!

Hehe, I think you quoted the wrong post, but I was just being funny. I don't need a reason to work from home, I can do it whenever, so if someone asks why, we just make up reasons. "It might be sunny tomorrow morning and I'm concerned about sun glare on the drive in."

When I worked at IBM it was shorts and sandals when I had to come in fix something that went down.

My current job is great because it's the first place where the director really recongnizes that IT folks work a lot of hours other than the hours they are sitting at a desk. My team usually goes out every Friday for lunch, and depending on the week, lunch can go until 7 or 8 at night! We're a little bit higher on the food chain, but it's a good place to work. It's nice to work in an environment where people work hard, get the work done, and then can enjoy their time. This is also the first place that doesn't think that alcohol is some sort of liquid evil that must be banned everywhere.

I go in with a full suit. If it is raining I'll wear a rain jacket and leave my suit jacket at home. It is hilariously fun riding in trousers in the rain...but FORTUNATELY it didn't rain that much last year!

If we're 20minutes late HR chase up with our managers to why we're late and to what steps we're going to take to ensure it doesn't happen again. The only time that happened to me was when I drove back from my mates place and the traffic f0cked me up...

A few colleagues dress more a lot more casual. One is wearing brown casual trainers, brown jeans/ cords but he is sh!t hot and I could dress more relax if I wanted too.
