i can attest from working for a mechanic for well over a year (and seeing the more of the nasty things than those quick change people "you mean you aren't supposed to use a wrench to put on an oil filter?")...
minivans. They cost more to work on in terms of labor than the average station wagon or SUV. This being that everything is in the most idiotic place you could imagine. Batteries stuck under the floor, engines under seats, or dashboards...
doing a headgasket in a caravan/windstar/etc takes almost twice as long as in a normal car...
mopar minivans typically have reliability problems. There is a great tendency, espeicially in the 80's-early 90's 3.0L v6 to burn oil. Lots of oil. Windstar... well, if i bought one, it'd be at least 4-5 years old so that all of the recalls & problems were worked out. Very strange things.
I'd recommend:
read consumer reports, and not just the one for the newest models. You really want the five year, ten year, and perhaps older reviews, to see how the reliability aspect holds up. Look at the resale value of the vehicle
take it to a good honest mechanic who will tell you either, "this car is in good shape" or "this car is a pile of dog sh*t" make sure it's at least a 12pt full vehicle inspection. At some good shops, this can run you around 30-50 dollars, but it is worth EVERY SINGLE PENNY!
look at some other vehicles. some SUV's get comperable mileage, have better saftey ratings and are more capable vehicles.
finally, if you're going to go with a minivan, i'd probably recommend the honda... even though i'm a toyota man...
anyway... enough of me trying to be helpful.
