Is it kosher to ask a co-worker to be a reference for another job?

I'm looking for another job at my current job and have landed myself an interview. I know at the end of the interview they will look for references and I have one lined up but the only other good reference I could think of is a co-worker at my current job. We worked together for about a year or two and now he's on to a different project, would it be ok if I asked him to be a reference? Or is that a no-no?

Should be fine, though most lateral moves will involve connections where clients or co-workers already are aware of the caliber and ethics of your work, so there is no reference really needed as the value of your work contributions demonstrably "speaks for itself".

You can even ask your boss if he's reasonable and willing to help you move in your career.

I applied for a step-up at my place, and if I get an interview, I will be using my manager and another senior engineer. I've done an assload for both of them, and they know me better than my other options from way back when. That and they've both been there for 15+ years, so probably know the interviewers well.

Hold its neck back, insert the knife beneath the jaw, and bring it all the way around. There’s going to be a good amount of blood, but don’t let that bother you. Have a bucket there for the blood, the innards, and the feathers.
