Creative have the strangle hold on EAX4 and I can`t see them releasing it to third party companies,as to gaming in general with nforce boards,I find the nForce sound compatible with all games I`ve tested,so it`s not a bad choice for gaming as long as you realize it doesn`t support all the EAX standards.

When you consider you can pickup an nForce board with SoundStorm for the price of an Audigy 2 ZS or less you get amazing value for money IMHO.
I personally owned both a A7N8X-Deluxe and an Audigy at one point, and I found myself going back to the Audigy. In headphone mode(where I do most of my gaming), the Audigy's positioning was better than the SS's, and this is before kicking in EAX 3. You're right of course that Creative has ultimate control, but I can't see how Nvidia can turn out as good of a product without it. :brokenheart:

It was definite soundstorm lovin. But very confusing review, for uneducated types like me anyways. No normal stuff like signal to noise ratio and frequency response. Actually they did not even seem to do a subjective comparison through a nice speaker system. Just a bunch of fps (all close to each other) in games and a mention that if you rent dvd's and play them through your computer - the sound should be better - but again no real comparison or examples of why. Oh well is a nice onboard solution for the budget concious.

Yes,

EAX 4.0 ADVANCED HD games are now available. Experience Total Audio Immersion in top game titles like Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, Colin McRae Rally 04? and Thief: Deadly Shadows?.
To name a few,Link..

Good technical info on EAX 3 and EAX 4 here at Digit-life .

The only way I can see Nvidia competing with Creative with EAX is to make/design their own unique version, they would have to release a stand alone soundcard etc....and also make the features available down the road on their next generation of nForce boards.

I don`t see no real reason why Nvidia can`t try and compete with Creative/EAX etc..
