Is it just me, or has cable HD quality seriously declined?

I don't watch a whole lot of TV, my main source is football.

But, I'm watching the game on NBC right now, and it looks like shit. Blockiness all over the place. Fox's HD wasn't much better, but the picture was jumpy and the HD feed seemed like it was lagging. CBS's was ok, but not nearly as good as it used to be.

Most of the blockiness occurs in fast motion scenes, but it's never been this bad.

Signal compression, unfortunately all cable companies are doing it to some extent due to the the limited bandwidth of their systems. It's also why some cable companies are cutting out carrying both analog and digital channels of the same source to free bandwidth to carry more HD channels.

Thye shoot in full hd at the venue, then compress it for satellite uplink or fiber dist, cable company receives it compresses it again to send to you. If you're lucky this is the path you get. Sometimes there are more steps involved, usually with additional compresion.

One of the big reasons I switched to Fios was the promise that this wouldn't be nearly as bad, and so far I'm enjoying it. It's especially noticeable with sports.

Comcast just started re-compressing it's HD channels this past year. This is why it looks like crap in high-motion scenes (mostly apparent in sportscasts).

Call them and complain. I just did.
