Is it just me or does the Evo 4G look inferior to the Iphone 4?

Thank you for posting the dimensions of the phones.
People are just ignorant when they say the HD2/Evo is too big especially compared to the iphone.
The HD2/Evo is barely biggger than the iphone yet people make ignorant comments like "it won't fit in my pant pockets".
I don't ever recalling people crying about the iphone being too big.
I like the iphone and will definately get a iphone 4 to play with once its out but 3.5" is just too small these days.
I like the specs of the iphone 4 but they should have made it with a 4" screen.
Now thats a perfect compromise.
Apple wouldn't even have to make it much bigger. Just reduce the bezels as much as scpossible.
BTW, I'm a HD2 owner(also have an iphone sitting around) and I love the screen size.
I can't imagine going back smaller but I would settle for a 4" screen since using the phone with 1 hand would greatly improve.

I would actually rather have the phone be a little smaller than have a bigger screen. I don't think the trade-offs of the bigger phone/worse battery life is worth the little bit extra size screen. But thats just my preference.

The absolute measurements might not be all that great, but when it comes to a portable/pocketable device, even a third of an inch is pretty significant. Once again, it comes down to preference. Just like some people don't mind having a huge bulging wallet, others dont mind a heavier/bigger phone. Personally, I like super thin phones, and the new iphone is great in that regard. Now, if only they could make the screen bigger without making the phone bigger...

Agreed. That's why a 5 lb laptop feels much heavier than a 3 lb laptop/netbook even though neither should be a strain to anyone.

The Evo is 4.8 inches in height, 2.6 inches wide, 0.5 inches thick, weighs 6oz
The HD2 is 4.74 inches in height, 2.64 inches wide, 0.43 inches thick, weighs 5.54 oz
The iPhone is 4.5 inches in height, 2.3 inches wide, 0.37 inches thick, weighs 4.8 oz

Evo is a little wider, a little less tall, and a little thicker, but yeah, pretty close.

and the first and second gen Iphones were a little closer in size
4.5 inches (h)
2.4 inches (w)
0.46 inches (d)
Weight: 4.8 ounces

What makes you think the iphone4 is better? EVO has front facing camera for video calls (iphone can only do this over wifi). Evo has HDMI out, will be nice when I go on vacation and orb into my PC to watch a movie on the TV in the hotel. Higher resolution camera. Probaly will be a tad faster spec-wise. Call quality is better, as iphone call quality is horrid. Don't know what that other guy was talking about with the quality being good on ATT. Go on cnet and read how many dropped calls they had and how spotty the calls were. (Granted this was on the old 3GS though). Also throw in 4g, which I mean keep it real if you just browsing the web to look for something 3g is plenty fast. Only reason why i'll problay use 4g is if i'm using it as a hotspot or something a long those lines. Not to mention 4g coverage is rolling out in quite a few areas that Sprint hasn't even given official coverage to yet besides their expanded promised coverage list by the end of the year. Check the android forums, upstate new york, Rochester, and Syracuse have it although not officially supported. Throw in a FAR superior voice/data plan pricewise from Sprint. (Sorry ATT I like my unlimited data) All that said you tell me where you think the iphone4 is better than the evo.

I have the EVO and it is amazing. The screen is the perfect size. I can hold the phone comfortably and it fits in my pocket no problem. RDPing into a server is actually decent now with a screen this big. 4g is definitely fast and I only toggle it on when I am actually going to be web browsing or otherwise using a lot of data. I still had over 40% of my battery life on my phone when I put it on the charger yesterday after about 18 hours off the charger.

My brother bought an HD2 a couple weeks ago. The screen is huge and amazing and the phone didn't feel awkward or uncomfortable to handle. I'm guessing that the Evo and HD2 are pretty close in terms of size. I think it'd be uncomfortable in a tightish pair of jeans, but no problem in khakis or cargo pants or something.

I have the HD2, and I can assure you it fits in regular pants/jeans perfectly fine. Its -barely- bigger than the original iPhone. People seem to forget that despite the giant screen, the HD2 has practically no bezel, and its very, very thin for its size.

Anyways, regarding Evo vs Incredible vs iPhone 4, frankly they're all very similar phones hardware-wise, it really depends on what you want out of it and what you value.

EVO isn't too large for me, and not much larger than 3GS in the pocket. I wouldn't necessarily go any bigger though. The upper bound imo is right around 5" diagonal

Then you need to talk to the people who were making the first jump from a regular cell phone to a smart phone a couple years ago. That was the #1 complaint that they had among my friends. They were used to their smaller phones.

Well, we'll not talking about 3 yrs ago either where tiny flip phones were the norm.
We'll talking about today's current phones with the Blackberries, Droid, all the smart phones that have sliding keyboard.
The HD2 is actually lightly than alot of those phones and actually smaller than some of the blackberries but I still hear people crying about "the phone is too big" ???
Give me a break.

No, you get a clue. Do you think 8 inches is too big for a cell phone? Well if you say 8, why can't someone also have the *opinion* that 6 inches is too big? If they can have that opinion, why can't someone be of the opinion that 4 inches is too big?

Almost everyone would agree that a device beyond a certain size is too unwieldy to act as a phone. Now that "certain size" is up to people's opinions, but some of us happen to think that most will consider phones of the EVO's side as too big....that is all dude.

4.3" is perfect for a touch interface smart phone. 3.5" may look nicer in hand and pocket, but too small for smart phone IMO. I like smart phone to be at least 3.8" to be more useful. btw I have small hands and I don't find the EVO awkward to use at all.

Can someone please post
(display area)/(face area) for iPhone and EVO?
iPhone seems to have a lot of black bezel on top that could have been used for a bigger screen.

They wanted to keep the screen the same aspect ratio, so they would have had to make the phone wider. Its already .3 inches narrower than the evo. Its also thinner and shorter. They had to put the guts somewhere.

2.6 inches is the width of the 4.3 inch HTC devices, and it's right around the width of a dollar bill. I think as long as the phone is not wider than the wallet it's fine in terms of fitting it into the pocket, so it's better to use that whole width to get a bigger screen, especially since as you said, you are going to need all that under the screen real estate to fit the guts anyways.

Personal preference I guess. I would rather have my phone on the smaller end. I thought the 3Gs was a good size for having in a pocket. I am looking forward to something even thinner.

I can't help it you have small hands - I had zero problems with size. Both have pros and cons. For me:

Evo pros.
Android for "roll your own" open types
Huge beautiful screen
Sprint 4G
No data caps
Fast as fuck
Insurable

Cons
Gets hot in hand IME
Poor Battery life for power sellers/business men/13 yr old girls

iPhone
Also, beautiful screen..little smaller
Sapphire glass, Mohs scale 9 will not scratch in pocket with keys and coins
Battery life, rumored to be much better than already all day decent 3GS

Cons
AT&T's data caps and maybe service depends on region
Will break as all hard glass does when dropped
Apple's lock down
Non-insurable

Basically I'll prolly stick with my TP2 and wait.

Great to have choices, isn't it? If you find the large screen of the Evo too big, you have get an Incredible, the Moto Droid, an Eris, a Hero an LG Ally, myTouch 3G/Slide, etc. Something for any taste or preference. If the iPhone was the only choice, that would be a blow against consumers for certain.
