Is it just me or does dts5.1 sound way better than dolbydigital5.1?

yeah, i like DTS better too, it sounds louder, sharper and crisper than Dolby Digital. You can compare the two on Gladiator.

DTS is less compressed so it takes up more room on the DVD.

I agree with aeroguy. I thought I was the only person that even LIKED DTS.

I actually try and buy movies that are encoded with both DD and DTS, or just DTS. Not all HT receivers will do DTS, though.

When I buy a HT receiver, I make sure it supports DTS. I made sure my DVD player would read the DTS track. When I buy DVDs I look for DTS over DD. I also try to find DTS 6.1 discs, but they can be hard to find. Of course, now that I have a 6.1 receiver I need to buy the extra rear speaker and hook it up.

given a choice, I usually always pick DTS. However, a well-encoded DD 5.1 mix will sound better than a crappy DTS mix. For example, the Jurassic Park DVD... the first few they made in DTS sound terrible, no bass at all, then in later production, they fixed the DTS track.

I really like DTS DVDs like Shrek, which came with two discs. One had DTS and the other with DD 5.1. I kept the DTS disc and gave the other disc to my sister.

dts has a much higher bitrate than dd....I think its like 1.5 Mbps vs 512 Mbps per channel. Not only that, DTS encoded discs will always have full 6 channel sound. DD may not always be full 6 channel. On some movies they just convert pro-logic to DD and leave out the sub channel and keep the rear channels monural. So just cuz it says DD doesn't mean you get full theater sound. But with DTS you're guaranteed 6 full channels.

There are a lot of misconceptions about DTS.

Let's take your example of Gladiator. The DTS version sounds better because it is an entirely different sound mix. If the Dolby track used the same soundmix, it would sound the same. Another good example is Saving Private Ryan: The DTS version is so much better than the DD5.1 version, but again...it's a different sound mix.

NOW...let's take an example of a DVD that uses the exact same sound mix for both Dolby and DTS: Twister. The Dolby track is encoded in 448Kbps, and the DTS track is encoded at full-rate (which is very rare, most DTS dvd's are half rate) which is 1509Kbps!! A lot more than dolby. But you know what? Both tracks SOUND EXACTLY THE SAME!! Different codecs, but identical sound mixes. IMO, Dolby is a much more efficient codec than DTS! I don't think DTS would sound so good if you brought it down to Dolby bitrates.

That being said, I always choose DTS if given the choice because it will either be identical to the Dolby track, or sound better because DTS tracks often get a better mix.

dts has a much higher bitrate than dd....I think its like 1.5 Mbps vs 512 Mbps per channel.
90-95% of the DTS dvd's out there are half-rate which is 754Kbps for ALL 5.1 channels. Only very few are encoded at the 1.5Mbps DTS (again, which is for all 5 channels...not 1.5mbps per channel).
I'm not sure what you're trying to say about DD? If it says Dolby Digital 5.1, then it is 5.1 discrete channels, just like DTS. If it says "Dolby Surround", then it's just Dolby Pro-logic like you said.

Also, just to point out, while StarWars episodes 4-6 are not out on DVD, they were released on LaserDisc. Now, the question is, did they ever have DTS encoded LaserDiscs? The only one I have is RotJ on LaserDisc, but I have no idea what sound encoding it has (my LD player isn't even able to read the AC3 soundtrack, so it's not like I would have ever known). I'll have to check it out tonight, though I bought the LD many years ago, and it might have been even before DTS was being brought to bear in theaters let alone being used in HT products.

Edit: Or normajean just saw Eposides 4-6 in a theater that was playing the re-released films in DTS.

I will agree that DTS sounds better than DD to the trained ear, however it's not worth the cost on most DVD's. DTS takes up much more space since it has a higher bitrate which means most (good) DTS discs have almost no extras.

There are some DVD's with both DD and DTS loaded with extras however, but the only way to do this is the lower the bitrate on the DTS track which kinda defeats the purpose of it since it will sound no better than the DD track. (sometimes worse)

ameesh and all, there is a trilogy dvd set available to buy, overseas. apparently there was a ld release of the special editions and they were converted to dvd. so yes I do have the dvd versions of ep4-6. PM me if you want to know more. each disc is presented in dd 5.1 and dts 5.1. My onkyo receiver reads dts the without a problem. It's cool when alderaan and the death star blows up and you hear the sonic explosion ring woosh past you!

You'd think with all the people likely to buy these DVDs, they find someone with the time/money to work on them. Hell, DVDs might not even exist by then anymore. Could develop the DVDs now sell 'em like hotcakes and when "the next new thing" format is released, they can sell the whole series in a box set of sorts. Nah, I'll just rip the THX certified tapes to my PC and burn them to DVD-R til I can get something of quality. Tapes don't last forever ya know.

Why Lucas did not use DTS in EP1 or EP2. Because he is one of the majority owners in Dolby Labs.
so yes I do have the dvd versions of ep4-6.
What you have is pirated crap from mainland China, with a poor video transfer that is VHS quality at best with a inacurrate DTS track. Get the real stuff when its released. Stop buying this tiger country pirated crap.

no, normajean is right. my friend has the same star wars dvds (from malaysia), and they beat the pants off vhs in every aspect. they even have chapter search and a bunch of extras (original trailers, interviews, storyboards). i'll buy the real thing in 3 or 4 years when it comes out, but in the meantime i get to watch the original 3 in laserdisc quality with great sound. but that's still very noble of you, raincity, to be a martyr and suffer for all of us while we take advantage of lucas' arrogance.
an older article, but still has some good questions why lucas hasn't released sw 4-6 on dvd
the argument that lucas wants to release one super version is especially stupid - how many different vhs versions have already been released?

Lucas can do what ever he pleases, its his movie and you folks need to respect his wishes since he is the creator of the film and its his right to change it however the way he wants us to view it. Martyr no, lining the pockets of scum sucking leaches that pirate films by buying their product does a great disservice to the entertainment industry in whole. If you need to see EP 4/5/6 right now, then go buy a used laserdisc player and a used copy of the Def collection. The pic quality is better than the Malay import and the Laser PCM track processed in PL 2 rules over the cooked up DTS track.
