Is it just me or does anyone else not like Tom's hardware?

I don't think it is something recent, but THG is just awful! I read the review on the 120GB WD drive today and I don't think I can ever go back. The site sucks and the reviews are just bad. What does anyone else think?

I like his reviews, not because of what he thinks about the product but because of the techinical info that is usualy in his articles.

Technical information is nice, but it is getting tougher and tougher to find it in his reviews. I just get the feeling it's turning into a Gibson type of site....

I wont comment on the quality of the reviews, but....

I have a problem with the attitude of Tom (and to some extent, the entire site). Tom Pabst seems like an arrogant ass. Like what he said in the first review of the 1+GHz Pentium III (that actually worked): "I think it should be us and us alone who test the new Pentium processor at this speed".

List goes on.... The "exclusive" preview of Clawhammer... What's so exclusive about it? Several sites, including anandtech had the exact same information.... The "Exclusive" preview of 533MHz FSB Northwood... There was nothing exclusive about it, it was just overclocked P4!

I agree, he is pretty self-inflated. I was disappointed to see The Register partner with him for content for their US site.

Thats advertising. Whether you like him or not, he got at least the attention 3 of you. Just think how many more people out there are browsing around like yourselves and you'll see why he tacks on BS like "Exclusive" and acts inflated.

I don't particularly care for the site.

You'd think that with the sponsorship and readership they have, they could find editors and authors who could form complete, gramatically correct sentences.

It's still useful, and doing things the AT folks don't have time for anymore like comparing performance and noise levels on large IDE drives. I just filter out the self-promotion and bias and read the charts :)

I think a large part of it is that I don't have much tolerance for stupid/lazy or ignorant people anymore and it seems like most of the content on his site is one or the other. I can get technical info from the manuf. site or another tech site.

I agree for the most part. Hardware news is really slowing down recently, though, SEE: the complaint thread yesterday about the lack of hardware reviews on AT. Sometimes I browse over there for a few minutes just to see if there's any new headlines. I can't stand to read much because I'm not a fan of authors having a superiority complex.

Speaking of lack of new things on AT, anyone know how long the Audio poll has been on the front page? I don't think it is a big deal, but just curious. I think THG is riding on reputation right now. When that happens, there is much potential to do more harm then good to the technical community IMO.

I remember on September 11th, HardOCP was covering the WTC news, because the real news sites were getting hit too hard. Tom Papst decided to write a little commentary on HardOCP, trashing them for taking advantage of the situation just to get more hits. I couln't believe it. I emailed tom and told him I would never visit his arrogant site again. And to this date, I never have.

Amen. I actually don't mind the reviews, but the overall site design is absolutely hideous for 2002. Spend some bucks and get a good team of designers and programmers to make your site more readable!!! It's like flashing back to 1996 when you go to his site.

As well he should. Dr. Pabst is a genius of the highest order, and deserves our unwavering respect for his profound accomplishments.

I actually visited Tom more often than Anand a year ago, but I slowly found out that Anand (and later HardOcp) was better and when I joined the forum I pretty much stopped going there. Checks it out every month or two, but as others say, it's nothing special, I certainly don't care about it any more.

Harvey - What? Are you implying that all is not well between you and the good Doktor? ;)

I thought of adding the smiley, but instead went for the more "Russ-like" dry sarcasm. I should have known, I am not Russ - I am young and virile... Hey I'm kidding Russ, I said I was just kidding, dammit! -No! Not the face! My eyes! My beautiful eyes!

exactly.. the articles are fine... but I just can't stand the design.... its extremely unprofessional. That black background in combination with all the banners screams cheesiness. they're soo many distractions I can barely concentrate on the articles. They really need to redo their site.
