Is it just me or do Google's directions kind of suck?

I tried making a conversion from MapQuest to Google Maps when it came out, just because Google seems to be good at everything, but actually I seem to really be disliking Google Map's directions, and have now gone back to MapQuest. Google's directions have steered me wrong twice already (directions were 100% wrong), and even when they're not wrong, they seem to choose much less obvious roads, roads that are harder to find and make the trip be more "steps."

Which do you like more?

Yeah, they do. It told me to take I-94 --> I-69 --> I-90 from Detroit to Chicago, which would be 35 miles extra.

Plus, everyone who has EVER gone from Detroit to Chicago just hops on I-94 and stays on it until they end up in Chicago. Seriously, it's one road for 250 miles.

Unfortunately, I have found this to be true as well last time I had to visit a client. Use a combination of Yahoo and Mapquest, and you should be fine.

sometimes google maps and yahoo maps show different total miles. I use both and choose the higher to calculate my mileage expense =P

I just used both to get directions to my local zoo, Google broke it up into 20 steps, MapQuest only 12.

And it was not pretty when Google gave me a blatantly wrong direction when coming home from Kennywood...

I never use directions from the internet. I look at the map and write my own directions.

Google directions suck. I use RandMcNally. I have used them like a million times and never was it wrong.

Google Maps is definitely not my #1 choice for this area. MapQuest is much more accurate.

Don't know how much you know about Chicago, but in order to get to Univ. of Illinois @ Chicago you get off of 90/94 at Taylor St/Roosevelt road, go west and turn on Halsted.

Google told me to take Congress into the loop only to come back out again where I was at before. Strange.

edit: Isn't the path by the red arrows shorter and more logical?

What a coincidence. That is where I am right now. I work at the computer center on campus. I know exactly were your talking about.

I never realized how off Google Maps was, now I will be more careful in who I get my directions from.

Yeah, and HA! I just typed in Detroit, MI --> Chicago, IL on Google Maps and it gave me these:

map...go south on 75 and then take 80/90 over...retarded...

MSN Mappoint

That is king.

http://mappoint.msn.com

Sync with your PDA in 1 click. I dont need GPS that way nor do I need to print out jack. Same directions as 1-800-555-TELL

It gives me the best route to go to school unlike Yahoo. Plus MSN shows more important locations than Google.
