i think that's the reason why you rarely see any asian goths/emos/punks. my parents would slap me silly if i dressed up like them.

I hate to break it to you, but most parents are like that, to some degree. I'm white, and I had no doubt whatsoever that I was going to college and graduate school from a very young age, in large part because education was stressed so highly by my parents.

Haha, seriously. Every other post here by an Asian member involves bitching about his strict parents.

:thumbsdown::roll:

A slight exaggeration, but I never even knew what stereotypical Asian parents were like until I came to ATOT.

*My parents aern't depending on me for their retirement but I can see how that can be

It's not as bad as many people percieve it to be. There are cases where it is quite extreme though (EX: this one kid would kinda go suicidal over b's led to nihilism).

My parents do make comparisons to other people in my family a lot though and that is annoying but guess what you can choose to listen or ignore it.

In the end it's their desire for you not to end up a bum without a job etc. I don't blame them for it either, my parents didn't escape the killing fields and adapt to a new culture and work their asses off for me to make minimum wage.

This is because it takes about ten years to forget your childhood fvcking sucked cause of two hours of homework, two hours of SAT practice, and two hours of piano every day after school starting when you were twelve.

I'm Chinese and thankfully my parents didn't push me too hard. They just wanted me to try and be good.

In some ways I kind of wanted them to be a little more involved in my school life in terms of knowing a little more of what was going on and stuff. But they were too busy/tired working in their restaurant.

For example, when I was in high school I was invited to try out for the "It's Academic" team. I was kind of excited about it but trying to explain to my mom what it was about and getting a blank look back brought me back to reality. And trying to explain the SATs and stuff got a similar reaction.

Overall, I prefer my situation to others where their parent's got on their kids case for getting 5 A's and 1 B.

If I ever have kids I would be more like my parents except I would try to know a little bit more what's going on in their lives (and what are they worrying/excited about etc).

OP, not just you, I think almost, if not all Asian parents push their kids hard in school. I think it is somekind of upmanship between Asian families.

I remember when I came home to visit my mom and family after over 10 years absent. She took me around the whole block and told everyone that her son came visit from the US and he had BS and MBA degrees from US college. She shown my degrees to everyone and they thought it was such a big deal.

To be honest, I felt kinda weird but it made my mom happy so it was worth it.

Oh yes, don't let me start about getting married and start a family. If you have a college degree and in decent shape/look, you can pick and chose any girls in Asia. I think it has something to do with bring their family to the US too.

I hate to break it to you, but you have no idea what you're talking about. It's not about going to college or graduate school. It's about Ivy League or you're a complete failure. Of course, not all Asian families are like this, but many actually are. If you're not Asian you have no idea what we're talking about.

i actually know someone who pushed their kid to the limit, literally. i think he's about 10 now, but he had swimming, violin, and piano lessons, and to top it off, he had to learn an hour of chinese a day.

Well in a sense it is "heaven" when your comparing it to Cambodia... where nurses hawk people's meds on the street.

Oh and if you even mention the thought of having a girlfriend in high school and college, you're dead meat.

I think I was only 5 years when my relatives started lecturing me on this.

My moms asian and she fit the stereotype, where as my dad is white and he didn't do anything like my mom. On the other hand, my white step-dad pushed me harder than my mom to the point where i fractured a bone by punching a wall. My girlfriend's parents never seemed to push their kids that way, and they both did better than me with their school work. It was a long battle during high school, but in the end I was allowed to make my own decisions and I truly think that's the only way i could have learned.

It'd be like me saying based on what I've seen on ATOT all white kids are spoiled little brats who are unappreciative of anything their parents ever do for them..or, their parents are simply deadbeats.
