Tristicus, it does not matter where you and I are politically, what matters is the ability of the USA to advance and adapt to the changing challenges of the future. Which means we have to look at the problem collectively.
But be it resolved, during the eight years of GWB&co, the worse elements of the extreme right of the GOP got exactly what they had wanted for the past 50 years enacted into law.
As common sense reforms put in place during the past 100 years were dismantled and the GOP extreme right was able to put their pet theories to the test in the USA.
I think we can all agree that those totally free market theories totally flopped and as a result we got an economic meltdown that reached critical mass by 10/08.
As a result, the democrats took the House, the Senate, and the Presidency in the election of 11/2008.
The problem is, the GOP opposes all common sense reform, so we are still stuck most of the policies of GWB.
The GOP strategy seems to be somewhat the strategy of an Ostrich, somehow they hope to be rewarded by the American people for blocking everything, but if the GOP has seemingly learned nothing in the screw ups of GWB. And if the GOP ever gets back in charge, they will totally screw up the country again inside of two years. In short the GOP does not know what its stands for but enjoys its current ability to oppose everything.
In terms of health care reform, maybe we will just have to wait until our current health care system collapses. The handwriting is already on the wall as various private insurers are raising their rates 20-40% now in 2010. And if that trend continues, many private employers will simply do what many have already dome, opt out and quit coverage for their employees at all.
I personally do not think the real problem lies in the main stream GOP or in the democratic party, but rather in the current leadership of the GOP who serve only the interests of the extreme right wing of the GOP.
Someday, all this madness will pass and republicans and democrats can again work together in a bi-partisan manner, but until then, this country will be unable to adapt to new the new challenges and demands of an ever changing world.
Maybe best expressed as the GOP brainfart called the " project for a new American century ", that sadly turned out be how to totally screw up America in the shortest possible time.
