If you own cassettes & want to make a copy by encoding them by putting the songs onto CD & listening to them in your car .......... Is this legal ?

What are the laws distinguishing this ?

If you bought the cassettes and you are using it for your own purposes. Not for distrobution or sales or any such thing then I think it is. But I'm no expert on the subject.

I agree, but there might be some screw up copy right laws made by RIAA saying it's not legal (semi joking...) like the screw up software EULA (you didn't own the software, only the right to use the software, and the right could be revoked *blah blah.......* )..

It is perfectly legal for you to copy material you own for your own non-commercial use. This provision is codified in the Audio Home Recording Act of 1992 and also in the body of copyright law. Here's a link to satan's site explaining things more or less: RIAA and copyrights.
