From a complete stop, floor the accelerator until you reach the speed limit while on a public road?

there is a thing called aggressive driving, which can be under the speed limit as well. so it depends.

Yep, and wreckless driving... and street racing, if the cop is pissed enough.

It is legal as long as you do not break traction.

That would depend on if you were driving a Geo Metro or a Pontiac GTO.

It depends on your car. I could do it all day long in my accord, and no one would care. If I did it in my old mustang there would be lots of smoke and melted rubber around, and someone might think that was excessive.

Unless the cop is in a completely forgiving mood, you're probably going to get a ticket.

It's called "exhibition of speed" here in California. Cop pulled my friend over for it once (I was riding with him), gave him a huge lecture, and let us go with a warning.

I believe it is... I've heard such an "offense" is called "testing your acceleration". Then drag racing is when you happen to be testing your acceleration at the same time as the guy in the adjacent lane is also testing his acceleration.

Yes, it's called excessive acceleration or something ungodly stupid like that.

I actually got ticketed for this back in 2000. The cop wrote it up as "speed racing" and the fine was ~$500 something. I beat it in court. :)

If you own a Yugo, nope.

My first car was a 1980 Plymouth Champ (made by Mitsubishi!) with 77HP and a three speed auto. I floored it from a stop alot and I don't think anyone ever noticed.

we had one of those, but it was manual, with the hi/low shifter thing, so it was sorta like an 8 speed, but not really

i liked that car

"Exhibitionist driving" basically covers anything that the cop doesn't like but there's not a law that explicetly disallows.

Did your passengers ever mess with the pedals by sticking thier feet behind the A/C box?

Long ago - had a friend get a ticket for "unnecessary accelaration" in an auto 5-door Pontic T1000 (Chevette clone). There's no way that car did the quarter mile in under 20 seconds, but it probably made a lot of noise trying. I recall riding in it and my buddy having the accelerator floored and the beast topping out about 78 mph. That car was scarier at that speed than anything current would be at 110 mph.
