not me. I just happened to be getting in late and saw someone picking stuff from a few houses trashcans and loading it into their car. I called the police but I had a bad connection and I could not hear them/ vice versa, so I just gave up.

I'vegone dumpster diving before--never thought about the legality of it. I figure if someone put it in the trash, no one should care if I took it and could use it.

Why would you call the police on someone who is digging in the trash? Get a life.

I don't think it is illegal. Police are allowed to sieze your trash with out a warrent, so I think random people would also be allowed to.

This is why if I throw something away that has any personal information on it, i will either (1) burn it, or (2) shred it, before trashing it.

Identity theft is on the rise; dumpster diving must be getting somewhat popular due to the fact the term is now covered in intro to computers text books.
Its been covered in the news recently by one of the local Baltimore news stations. One of the personel covering the story dug up documents that had social security numbers along with names & addresses on various documents that was dug up from a dumpster.

Next time you get one of those pre-approved credit card applications, you might want to think twice about just tossing it in the garbage.
I know it may seem to be paranoid, but I have to say in this society today, anything is possible; just look how $hit is run on Pennylvania Ave, Washington D.C. :)

Identity theft FTW!!!!

Seriously though, if people were going through my garbage...I would call the police. If I put things out like a grill or tv or something of that sort next to the garbage, they are welcomed to it, but as for the regular garbage, they will be greeted by the police.

thanks for wasting taxpayer money. as soon as you put your garbage on the curb it is part of the public domain. you might as well call the cops on someone for taking your picture in a public area. maybe you should move to somewhere like china or cuba.

I am almost 100% sure that once someone throws something out, they surrender the property. As long as it isn't still on their property, i.e. street, it is completely legal.

My sister furnished her whole apartment in New York (city) by dumpster diving... thought it wasn't really "dumpster" diving as nothing was in dumpsters. She said people just leave perfectly good stuff out on the street to be picked up and taken to the dump. She got a bed, couch, chairs, dining room table... all in decent condition (good enough to be sold at a second hand store).

I don't know...

lots of people tend to hide their valuables in the curbside trash for safekeeping, so make sure if you see any burglars you call the cops and have then arrested.

You know you'd be pissed if they took wifey's jewelry from under the stanky, 4 days in the sun meat.
