is it illegal to drive with a broken tail light cover/lens?

It's perfectly legal to not have lights. They just spend the extra money to put the light systems in cars so they look pretty.

... I love sarcasm.

YEs, cannot have white light from a tail light. Red tape or even some paint on bulb can save a ticket...

do they make tape/plastic specificially for broken tail lights?

If it's not, it should be. Those uncovered bulbs are very bright, which is super-annoying to the driver behind you. Get it fixed, please.

Yes there is. It's not clear like glass tho.

Any auto parts store will have tail light repair tape.

I bought it at Wal-Mart..I believe it was $2.xx. It's basically transparent red packing tape, but much more durable.

yes, my inspection station said they cant pass it as is...so they taped it up with some semi clear red tape.
Inspection passed
State: NC

I think it is illegal, but the biggest reason to fix it is to keep from getting stopped all the time rather than to avoid actual tickets. Any broken lights or glass on a car is a beacon to every cop that sees it.
