Is it harder to get a credit card while you have a large balance on another card?

Just curious, if i have one credit card that has about $2000 outstanding, is it really hard to get a new credit card? Also, is it harder to get a credit card if you've had your credit checked recently? Advice from ATOT credit gurus would greatly be appreciated. Thanks! :beer:

yes.. if you are using over 70% of available credit definately yes.

Correct.

If your balances to limits ratio (e.g. you owe $1,800 on your $2,000 limit cc) is high, that's not a good thing.

Pay it down to 40% or less ($800) for at least 3 months, then apply.

I am paying off the credit card. I read somewhere about it being harder to get a card when you have a large balance. I was just confirming this.

increasing your credit limits will improve your chances. cc companies like to see that another cc co has granted you a certain credit limit. its total credit utilization, that is how much are you actually using of your total credit lines combined. not just on one card.
