Is it harder to get a credit card while you have a large balance on another card?

Just curious, if i have one credit card that has about $2000 outstanding, is it really hard to get a new credit card? Also, is it harder to get a credit card if you've had your credit checked recently? Advice from ATOT credit gurus would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!

Correct.

If your balances to limits ratio (e.g. you owe $1,800 on your $2,000 limit cc) is high, that's not a good thing.

Pay it down to 40% or less ($800) for at least 3 months, then apply.

You sound like my wife. Not too bright paying hundreds in interest over the years just to get something right when you want it. Just keep one card and limit youself.

I am paying off the credit card. I read somewhere about it being harder to get a card when you have a large balance. I was just confirming this.

increasing your credit limits will improve your chances. cc companies like to see that another cc co has granted you a certain credit limit. its total credit utilization, that is how much are you actually using of your total credit lines combined. not just on one card.
