First, is this flame bait?

Second, if it works it wont work "good" nor will it work well. :(

You're never going to run that game well with your processor. Get a new processor/mobo before you start looking at video cards.

I have a 2500+ Barton core, 9600XT, 1GB RAM.

I played BF2 on low for a while, but I quit after a month.

I won't play it again until I get new parts.

BF2 is a huge resource hog. I played it on most low with a 9800 Pro. Even with a 7800GT, if I put the settings to high, it really slows down. Its a great game, but they could have coded a bit better. HL2 is a example of a game that can run well on even a 3 year old card.

just the fact you have 512 ram will cause your system to commit seppuku

Hmm i put it to high on a 6800GT with 1.5 GB ram and a amd64 3000+ OC to 3.25ghz and it played just fine for me.

Speaking of ATI9800 (which is the title of this thread) .. I cant wait till I received my mobo/cpu combo ( ASrock 939 dual sata2 mobo + AMD Opteronn 148) that I ordered this afternoon.

because I'm very very curious about how much FPS gain will i get off BF2 / BF1942 / F.E.A.R with the above mobo/cpu + my current ATI 9800 Atlantis. Note that I will only run games at max of 1280x720 due to my 27" LCD monitor resolution limitation and I'm satisfied with this resolution.

When I receive it, I'll do a benchmark and post it here. The benchmark will be :
A) Aopen AX45-8XN, FSB of 133 (OC to 142) + Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.40 ghz OC to 2.556 mhz + ATI9800 Atlantis AGP 128MB
B) ASrock 939 dual sata2 mobo + AMD Opteronn 148 + ATI9800 Atlantis AGP 128MB

The (A) is my current system. The (B) is the upgrade that I just ordered today. This benchmark seems challenging to do , doesnt it ?

can u guys guess-estimate if the improvement on FPS will be very good ? good ? so-so ? And if its so-so, is this because the "only" bottleneck is the AGP8x ATI9800 ?

Benchmarks have proven the Battlefield 2 is entirely GPU Bound. A Celeron produces the same frame rates as an Athlon FX57, given that both machines have the same amount of ram and identical video cards. Low latency, high latency, low or high bandwith ram, Fast or slow CPU do not matter with Battlefield 2.

I was running battlefield 2 on my P3 1.4 GHz Tualatin with 512MB PC133 on a 9700PRO. And I get a steady 50FPS! I am running the latest ATI driver and it has been tweaked for best performance. There are a couple of maps where I have watched it hit 90FPS when I am stationary and looking down the side of a hill.

My advice to you: Do what I do before I ever buy any game. I always download the demo and test it out to see how well it runs on my hardware. Get the demo with the latest driver and report back to me.

EDIT: I am running this at 1152x864 on a CRT.

Please enlighten us with these benchmarks from a credible source. If your 'analogy' holds true then a Celeron 300a w/ 7800GT should be the bomb......or would it be someone set up us the bomb. :p

so ur saying I won't see an improvement on my super slow frame rate when I go from.. (A) to (B) ??

A) Aopen AX45-8XN, FSB of 133 (OC to 142) + Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.40 ghz OC to 2.556 mhz + ATI9800 Atlantis AGP 128MB
B) ASrock 939 dual sata2 mobo + AMD Opteronn 148 + ATI9800 Atlantis AGP 128MB

I think you'll see some improvement, but over all a game like that will be limited by the 9800 vid card, and ultimately not much faster... THough I think a PIII would be noticable slower than a 2.4 GHz or Opteron setup in BF2 (If it runs at all on the PIII)

oh okay thanks :)

i guess when my Asrock dual sata II mobo + opteron 148 comes.. (then im gonna use my current ATI 9800 AGP8x video card), I'll just have to have patience playing games .. until next year when I'm ready 2 upgrade to 6800GS video card :)

well at least it will be more playable than my current configuration ( see the (A) on my post above)

Another thing BF2 likes is RAM, how much in your system? I had 1GB and and a 9600XT, upgraded to 1.5GB and saw pretty good improvements, I was getting swap file lag. :p

Your video card is fine for battlefield 2, I would if I were you consider getting a whole new cheap AGP motherboard and sempron CPU, it will be a heck of alot faster than what you have now.

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813157081[/ll]
<b"><b"><b">
ASROCK AGP and PCI-express x16 Motherboard $65

ASROCK AGP Motherboard $46 with Socket 939 and 754
>Sempron 2600+ 1.6GHz 128k Socket 754 $64
Sempron 2800+ 1.6GHz 256k Socket 754 $75

For less than the cost of a 6800GS and new motherbord, CPU, and RAM can be had with money left to burn.

And for $38 512MB should be plenty of RAM
