Is it good that English is the current universal language?

Since English is pretty much the current universal language used, people can understand most of what we say, but we cannot understand the rest of the world.

For example, if you go to Japan, you and you don't know japanese, they can talk to you in English. So you would sort of feel like a n00b that you just failed to talk in their language.

Thoughts?

Kind of how all the spanish/chinese people talk to each other while on the basketball court, then you throw out a couple phrases to leave them feeling silly.

The world needs a universal language.

We should all meld into one giant society. That would rule.

American English is everywhere.

I turn on the T.V. in England, Desperate Housewives, Lost, Seinfeld, Just Shoot Me.

I turn on the T.V. in Rotterdam, Desperate Housewives, Lost, Seinfeld, Just Shoot Me.

I can only imagine that it has been this way for quite a long time.

Not to the same degree (pardon the pun). Math is (or should be) done the same whatever country you're in. The theorems/rules are all the same. Pythagorean's Theorem is the same formula no matter what country you're in. Even if the letters are symbolized differently, one would probably be able to recognize it given a drawing as context.

Wow, nobody has interjected that Chinese is more popular? That's fine by me, because the mass of the chinese-speaking population is substantially less dynamic.

Why would that rule? It's too bad so many small languages are going extinct. Homogeneity is a bad thing.
