Is it good idea to upgrade from Vista64 to Windows 7 in May?

I waited until Vista hit SP1 to upgrade from XP. Now that Windows 7 is coming out next month, would it be wise to upgrade to it rightaway, or wait for an SP1 fix also?

lol what happen to your patients???

I do not think it wise, I am dual booting and seeing if everything is gonna work before I move.

So far so good. Just 1 day though lol. Had beta but it had to many issues for use. rC is really good so far, I did change the taskbar though. Do not like large icon one. But i like the new taskbar as long as small icons. Like the jump lists and stuff 🙂

Yea I wonder where the op gets his crack from.

Only RC then RTM in July according to Ballmer.

1. Create image of Vista
2. Upgrade to Windows 7 RC
3. Enjoy

4. restore Vista if neccessary

Honestly I am not that crazy about upgrading almost any OS. Since I use multiple hard drives and partitions for my data, all I ever really need to do is just back up my documents and whatnot and I am good to go.

However, all I boot into Windows for is games, so I am a slightly different case.

It all depends on how much free time you have and how averse you are to reinstalling windows. The OS itself is rock solid - the only bugs I'm still having are driver and software related.

Fallout 3 crashes constantly because of apparent incompatibilites with the new video driver model.

My fingerprint reader doesnt work anymore, but that should be updated soon.

Every antivirus suite I've tried has also failed, even though they worked in the beta.

But overall, go for it. The RC is so good I probably wont even bother upgrading to RTM until it expires.

I waited for SP1 before moving to Vista, but I'm pretty sure I won't need to do the same for Win7. I'm still waiting for RTM though, I can't see myself using only a beta OS even if it's stable.

Does Apple offer an upgrade option to go from Leopard to Snow Leopard that is less costly than buying a full version of their OS?

Windows & isn't coming out next month. Release Candidate 1 is due this week. We'll likely see both a RC2 and a RTM version prior to Win7 being released at the end of the year.

How recently do you have to have bought Vista to get a free Windows 7 upgrade? I'll have owned Vista for about 10 months when Windows 7 comes out

What free upgrade? *If* there is such a program it will be like the Vista one where you'll get a coupon at the time you buy Vista, your not getting a retroactive free upgrade.

Microsoft has been hinting there is only going to be RC1, just like there was only (Public) Beta 1.
It could be like Vista where RC1 was widely distributed but RC2 wasn't so much.

They are also hinting they may try to get it out prior to Back to School 2009, though I think that would be rushing it. I think a late October prior to Holiday 2009 is a better idea.

It is stable. I have not booted into Vista since I installed the original Build 7000 when it first came out. There is no reason not to use it.

I'll ask here since I don't want to litter the forum with too many Win 7 threads. Does anyone know the latest Video drivers included in RC1? Or put it more correctly, up to which generations of video cards are natively supported in RC1? ATI and NV. I installed RC and the WDDM 1.1 is dated 3/10/2009. HD 3850 was supported but HD 4890 was not. I assume all NV cards would be recognized? (maybe except GTX 275 and later) How about dual-chip cards like 4850 X2, or 9800GX2, etc.?

Oh and I couldn't find the XP vPC. Where is it supposed to be?

This free upgrade. Back in February it was leaked that Microsoft would give free upgrades to Windows 7 for certain Vista licenses that were bought within a certain preceding time frame. That was back when Windows 7 was estimated to be coming out in December 09. Now that it has been moved up, I was wondering what the new window would be for free upgrades.

Thats pretty much the same program that they did with Vista/XP. In short, unless your new machine had 'Free Upgrade to W7' on it, your not getting one. There are not currently any OEM's (to my knowledge) that are providing this today, its still outside the upgrade Window. I would expect that Window to open this summer.
