The cd is in perfect condition, but my new NEC3520 won't read it. (Runs through the XP setup after formatting and can't find multiple files..

So the disc is bad right?

I then try a good XP Pro disc, and my NEC doesn't read that either?!!

Bad disc and bad drive? Is that even possible? ( then tried the XP home in a Lite on drive - No dice )

Always test the memory. Everything goes through the memory, so it's an easy place for errors. ;)

WOW

Just put in a stick of Hyper X 3200 - Epox boots up just fine.. RUn memtest on the ram and it's good

Start the XP install, still missing files.

So it's either the drive, disc, and ram bad.

Or definitely the ram, and the drive OR disc.

FvCK!!!

Going to.

The disc is definitely bad.

Tried it on my Lite ON drive which works ( suspect cable as of now ) and didnt work. Also tried on my working 50x as well, no dice ( separate computer )

Upstairs computer, try clean install of XP, no dice with that disc.

3 drives, no go.

Ram and disc are now definitely bad.

Just used another copy of XP (fully legit) as all 3 are, and it DID NOT install on the NEC DVD burner..

So the drive is now a good candidate for defective. If the cable switch doesn't
do it, im sending all 3 back.

Run Memtest again on the HyperX just to make sure that you're not getting errors. By the sounds of it, it could be that the mobo is bad, not the RAM/drive.

Ran memtest on the Hyper X.

I definitely don't think the memory is bad considering I have used it for a little over a year with no problems.

Just switched cases. The only things new are the Disc, Ram, and NEC 3520.

Ok..

Switched cables on first the Optical drivers -> errored out good disc.

"Irq not less or equal"

Some paging error as well.

Then switched on the HDD and it still did it. No dice

Went upstairs, took the same XP ( working ) disc and just did a nice clean install of XP no problems..

Now I am really starting to worry.

I really dont think it is HDD/MoBO/CPU considering i just used those last night and everything worked.

Only other thing i added was a 32MB AGP Radeon -> Seems to be working fine.

But i have finally narrowed it down to disc and ram DEFINITELY are defective.

The drive and rest of the comp are up in the air now..

I actually experienced almost the same problem last night on a system to be delivered this morning (which didn't happen). After swapping out components with it's working twin (they ordered two boxes) to no avail, I finally solved the problem by manually setting the memory to run at 333Mhz. No problems since, BurnInTest Pro 4.0 working well, no BSOD, or reboots. Have you taken a peek at your memory timings?

Good luck,

J

you know i had that problem with the exact drive 3520a. And i just thought the drive was a pile and i RMAed it and got a new drive and everything worked fine. ^_^

So it is probably your drive which i never like giving bad news like that but that is what fixed my problem because i was trying to install xp and it kept saying i had corrupt files and missing files while installing it

While I definitely think the NEC3520 is bad, I also threw in a working Lite-On that DID not work as well throughout the install.

Either way, i am happy I have least taken out the RAM and DISC out of the equation.

I will also look at the timings, but they are set to fail safe, which is like 1100mhz - 100mhz FSB.

:D

Thanks for the help!

Keep the suggestions coming.

LOL.. yea i think NEC made a bad batch of the 3520s at sometime and it just ticked me off because i hate RMAing stuff.

Anyways.... Man that is a stumper, did you try a lower speed cdrom like a 40x?

It might be just error sum because of at higher speeds and CDs that have scratches or whatever the reason.

If that doesnt work then... damn if i know sorry :(

Nope legit OEM.

Well believe it or not, pulled that battery and CMOS jumper and let them sit for a few minutes.

Did a slow format NTFS, and ran the install @ 1100mhz.

Using the NEC 3520 -> IT WORKED. ( Using my Good XP cd ) and the newly purchased key!!!

:D

Now running P95 @ 2200mhz ( wasn't running the install at the speed )

So all I need to do now is a get replacement stick of ram and a Copy of XP from Newegg.

:)

Thanks for the help.

I think between the Ram, disc and cables I had a problem.

:D
