I never really got anywhere with the last one, so this one has a better title.

I have a Logitech cordless keyboard that uses an RF transmitter, is it dangerous to have it on my lap? (dangerous as in ill effects to my noodle)

My female friend also wants to know if it's dangerous to her parts to have the RF transmitter on her lap.

Anyone have any concrete evidence one way or the other?

maybe, i doubt it though. I don't think it's powerful enough to do damage, may be wrong but that's my opinion.

Whats the Transmit power on a kb compared to a cell phone? not much

It may not even have the TX power to penetrate the skin.

Yeah, but if the cell phone is in your lap you're doing the phone sex thing all wrong.

Huh I'm not worried about RF emissions. You should be more worried about the Pill getting into the water supply that will cure you of having children.;)

RF = radio transmissions.

If you live in any half-decent city you will have radio broadcasts. Those broadcasts are of equal or greater signal strength. So you either should worry about the radio towers or not at all.

It's the radiation from cell phones that are rumoured to cause cancers, although it is not proven. FUD is all that you have, nothing more.

RF signals are non-ionizing. Meaning they cannot break any chemical bonds, and therefore can't do much of anything.

There has been some speculation that cell phones can cause cancer through 1) magnetic fields creating chemical changes that lead to cancer, or 2) generating heat that can create chemical changes. However, both are pretty far fetched.

No need to worry, there isn't enough power being used to have any harmful effects; of only slightly more concern would be the cell phones that people use.

I'd be more concerned with the microwave in the kitchen or electric blanket on the bed before the RF keyboard on my PC.

No sweat, Noriaki, only your children will suffer the effects of your self indulgence as a PC-aholic. :)

they are radio not micro waves. less energy.

also, aren't most keyboards IR, infrared...

i mean, radio waves are meant for things that needs to go through walls. like certain phones and headphones...

anyway, given the application, the radio waves would not be dangerous.

Mday...cordless keyboard IR? That would be annoying as hell...then you'd have to point your keyboard at the reciever...:)

I don't know about other keybaords Logitech's are the only cordless I've ever used, but they do go through walls and they aren't directional...I'm quite sure they are RF.

Is IR more common? I just though RF was sort of the norm...

I don't think any definitive studies have been done on that . . . but it reminds me of a tale . . . the doctor says, "I've got good news and bad news." Joe says, "What's the good news?" The Doc says your penis is going to be significantly larger." Joe says . . . "That's great! What's the bad news?" The doctor replies, "It's malignant!"
