Is it customary for children to buy gifts for their parents on the 25th anniversary?

I've never heard of doing such a thing, yet my co-worker insists that it is normal. What's your experience, ATOT?

I would think that you would get something for your parents on every anniversary, especially one as big as that. My parents have been divorced for many years though, so I could be wrong.

I didn't. As far as I'm concerned you aren't obligated to buy them gifts on any anniversary, as it's typically a private thing between the two of them... until they hit 50 years, throw them a party.

Some people do, some don't. It's a nice gesture, but I wouldn't say it's expected.

You don't owe them shit. You should be asking them what they have done for you lately besides the stuff they should be doing as great parents.

I owe my kids stuff (and I didn't even spawn them). I don't owe my parents anything (doesn't mean I would never buy them anything). Never heard of such a custom.

Typical ATOT sponge attitude.

yes, the 25th anniversary is a big deal. You should (choose at least one:

  • buy them a gift
  • send them on a cruise or vacation
  • throw them a party.

hmm. I'm not even sure when my parents anniversary is let alone how many years they've been married.

Those are all kind of hard to afford for 3 poor college students (me, brother, sister).

Myself, my wife, and her brother threw a HUGE party for my in-laws on their 25th in 1975. (they're both long dead, so no 50th)
None of us was rich...all working shitty jobs that didn't do much more than pay the bills, yet we managed to put on a great anniversary bash. All their friends and family were invited, we had sort of a pot-luck dinner, everyone bought a decent (not extravagant) gift...lots of silver items though), one of the friends made a "money tree" with silver dollars, (everyone was invited to add to it), and in all, it was a fabulous success.

my parents took us all (me, bro, sis) on a european vacation for their 25th anniversary. it was so spectacularly awesome in its epic failure that it was instantly unforgettable.

it's also the reason we have all sworn never to ever vacation with each other ever again.

here are some highlights: bro picks nose and throws it at sister and they stop speaking. dad yells at mom for not loading the camera with film and they stop speaking. mom spites dad and leaves the camera on the wall outside st. peter's basilica. after i parallel park the rental car at our hotel in rome after driving around the crazy ass local streets dad complains that the car isn't close enough to the curb and i say in a very quiet, calm but obviously extremely agitated voice "everyone...get...out...of...the...car" and they did as fast as they could. FUN!

My bro & I threw a surprise party for my parents on their 25th, and I was barely out of college (he just started college). Family flew in from all over the country and we invited all of their local friends. Some family helped financially; it was an awesome time and my parents still talk about it years later.

Heck, I used to by my in-laws a gift for every anniversary. I thought it was customary to purchase gifts for your parent's anniversary every year. :hmm:

IMO, it is proper to do so, but remember, most of ATOT is of the "Me-Me-Me" generation. "What have you done for me lately?"

So the consensus so far is:
10 say yes
4 say no
1 is vague

Co-worker said no usually, but yes for the 25th. He recommended a bottle of their favorite alcohol and gave me a list of decent bottles of $25-$35 bottles of whiskey my dad might like.

Us kids pooled our money and got my parents a VCR for thier 25th. This was like 1986 so VCR's were a big deal, at least I remember it being a big deal.

I agree with this. For an important anniversary like the 25th, you buy them a present.

For their usual anniversary, I get them a card and a gift certificate to a favorite restaurant. For the 25th I would do something bigger, like a vacation or throw a party.

What ungrateful brats don't celebrate their parents' anniversary? I can understand if you were abused, abandoned, etc.; but otherwise, yeah, you should get them something: a nice card w/GC, take them out to dinner, etc. I think the big ones are 25, 50, 60, 75 (if they make it there). My parents got a nice party and a living room hookup for their 25th. My family paid off my grandparents' mortgage on their 50th anniversary.

I was barely out of high school for my parent's 25th so no. However, we'll absolutely throw a party for their 50th, but that's in a while.
