as long as you sit back a bit gaming on a 42 incher is pretty good, if you get a xbox 360 controller you will be amazed at the additional visual fidelity a htpc is capable of..

when friends came over recently I put GTA4 and bfbc2 on the projector screen in the basement maxxed out and they literally drooled and pissed the wife off by staying way too late...

Make sure you get overscan right and the audio right and your golden. What video card do you have in your htpc?

You lucky dog you. A huge TV like that would be a tad better if it were 2560x1600 but you're gonna love playing games on that monster. Enjoy!

I kind of wonder if that set is true 120 Hz though. That is I'm wondering if it actually takes a 120 Hz signal or if it is just giving smoother movement by interpolating(hope that's the right term). Seems like a really good deal if it is true 120 Hz since the 3d monitors are already like $300 and most of those are much smaller TNs.

Not crazy at all, specially now that flat screens are affordable, still remember the not so long ago days of 20" tube monitors getting close to $1k, take advantage.

except for 3D. anyone know what the deal is with 3D tv?

Is it radically different that will make existing LCD display obsolete?

3d TV basically is a display that takes a 120 Hz signal so your video card or bluray player can send two 60Hz signals to it and it tricks your eyes into giving images extra depth with the shutter glasses. So no it won't make LCDs obsolete since 3d TV will need LCD or something to make the images. However if it catches on then it's going to reduce the value of non 3d tvs since they won't be able to display 3d content.

You will need a monster rig to play 3d games though because it essentially divides your fps in half.
